1911 pistol advice(maybe glock 19)
ok, I think that I know what i want to get for my first handgun.
I love the 1911's but also understand that they are pricey for ammo. I was looking at the new springfields (GI and mil spec) and the new remington R1. anyopne have any advice or experience with these? I really wanted to buy a genuine GI model, but they seem pricey and I( am afraid to spend the 4 and get a sketchy one) NJ has crazy gun laws and in order to get a pistol permit, it can take 1-6 months, I only have 1 permit right now and my brother suggested a g19 as a better gun, but I always wanted a 1911(a1), I can't get both right now. I wanted one that was USA made and that makes it hard, Remington is, springfield is not. what do the pelican shooters say?

Well, Glocks are made in Austria. My Springer Mil-Spec. cost $275 delivered, but came without the barrel. I rounded up the custom parts I wanted on eBay, shipped it all off to Robar and have a very nice 1911 for way under the new cost. Mil-Spec's are cheap if you shop. If you want new, that's another story. If you're shooting .45 ACP, the cost for ammo is the same regardless of what gun you run it through.

Get a milspec Rock Island for around $400... wholesale is around $315... I've got 2000 rounds thru mine w/ no issues other than 4 jams in the first 100 rounds (break in period).

well the glock is a 9mm. I am fine with European made, just kinda afraid of stuff made in the far east and Philippines (should I?) My brother is a certified glock armorer for his dept so he says glock all the way
I would be ok with used gun, I am looking on gunbroker all the time, but I have 30 days till the permit expires and then 1-6 months wait again(most nj gun shops will not let yo touch a handgun without a permit in hand by me ![]()

I would recommend the 1911. You can reload the .45ACP if you end up shooting it enough to justify the cost of reloading gear. The 1911 and the Glock are completely different guns, so it's really a matter of which one you like the best... Our local range lets you try put used guns to see what you like the best...good idea!

Go to gunbroker and find a FFL who will accept transfers, that is close to you and reasonable in price. The one I use here is a pawn shop. Guns are not the primary business, so they are fine with transfers.
If you are short of time, I suggest Buds Gun Shop. They have very good prices and can ship quickly. They might also be able to help you find a local FFL for receiving the pistol. Discount Guns for Sale - Buds Gun Shop

I always loved that cartoon. Can you think of anything else that was designed 100 years ago and is still in use and produced today, almost unmodified

9mm all the way if you intend to shoot thousands of rounds practicing as it is much cheaper.
You can't go wrong with a Glock (I love mine)..... That said, there are plenty of other decent 9mm handguns out there. At some point it starts becoming a Chevy vs Ford thing where everyone will say their brand gun is the best. ![]() ![]()

Not sure what you consider pricey, but a new or used Springfield GI is 400-600$ IIRC. Springfields are made in Brazil or in Illinois. Even the ones made in Illinois are not entirely made in the USA.
There are some good deals out their on used 1911s. |

Did you mean '$' instead of '4' ? Or spend $400 (or if you meant $4000 I could sell one of my GI's that isn't 'sketchy', or at least I don't think it is)? Jim

Feel is everything.
Go to a range that will rent you handguns and put 50-100 rounds through each. If you're looking at 9s, try the Berettas. I have many 1911s and had been reading a lot about Glocks so I bought two. I through a couple hundred lumps down range with each and then shot my accurized Colt Nat Match and the Glocks got sold within a month. I know it's not fair to compare a custom firearm to an out of the box model but like I said, it all about the feel. For some the Glock grip angle just doesn't suit their style. The Colt tend to be heavier but the feel and trigger of a custom 1911 fits my hand. good luck. ![]()

If 9mm is a consideration for the cost of shooting, and you just can't decide, check out the EAA Witness w/ steel frame. Quality clone of the CZ97b, get it in 45 w/ a 22lr kit for $600ish ( link EAA witness 45ACP and 22 LR conversion unit : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com found a few cheaper too) . Same frame can convert to 10mm, 40s&w, 9mm, 38 super as well...

Buy the spoon that fits your hand. Double stack Glocks tend to be too fat for the average hand.
How to tell if a pistol fits? Remove all ammo from the room. Confirm that the pistol is unloaded. Confirm again that the pistol is unloaded. Any ammo found? Then, remove them from the room. Then, line up the pistol in your firing hand so that the firing axis is in line w/ the forearm. If you can comfortably reach the trigger, as in pad of the trigger finger can pull the trigger w/o dragging it sideways, it fits. Glocks require large hands. So do out of the box 1911's w/ long triggers. Like most have said, go out and shoot some of each before deciding. Anyone can learn to shoot whatever they have. But would you drive a sports car where you can't reach the pedals adequately? |
