I am in Canuckistan & we pay more for electronics & computers & software & gas & beer etc etc etc. Typically 15-20% more. Which works out about right . . .

Joe, the one I'm planning to build for Margarita is now down to $297, because the case I wanted is gone and the one I swapped in has free shipping.

And the one I'm buiilding for Margarita is 65% of the power of my drafting station or 33% of the best Intel i7-980x. It should work pretty well for a while.

Ian, if I shifted it to Win 7 Home and to the DDR3 1333, it would knock off about $25-30. Then a USB keyboard and mouse would add ~$10.

You need a mail drop on the US side of the Falls, or have one of the guys receive it for you in Buffalo and then meet you in the Casinos on your side of the falls...You could then spend the savings on hookers and blow...

I blame it on the Queen. Monarch's are expensive these days.

I couldn't see a need for Windows Pro for my use.

Totally agree.

I know of several people on the GWN side of the border who do this and just drive down to the Colonies a couple of times a month to "share the wealth" here.

Believe we are heading to Niagara Falls in a couple of weeks. You far from there?

I spent the extra for the "XP Mode" in case one of our business programs needs it. I'm running some older software (Office 2003 - because I prefer the older interface) and want to make sure it will run. Pro also has extended "support", through 2020.

A 1 - 1 1/2 hour evil drive. On weekends, add time because of the traffic jam of bus loads of Asians going to the falls (and the casino). There is a nice back roads route up & through the escarpment which we have used as a Porsche run.

Sun VirtualBox is free and I prefer it to XP Mode.
Of course, you need your own copy of XP to load on the virtual machine.

Everything I have runs. I am using some older crap - Access 2003, PS CS3, Corel 9, MS Image Composer - and it all works well. I haven't brick-walled yet. My Canon legacy scanner works & an old HP Laserjet. I just had to find the drivers.

The test will come when our Montreal IT guy does the remote desktop connection so I can tap into the server.

I've been running Windows 7 on 8-9 PC's at my house for several months now and they are all running well. Rock solid, no "BSOD's" and the PC's range from Pentium 4's to Quad Core CPU's and all PC's have 2-4GB of RAM and decent, not not "gamer class" video cards... No problems or incompatibilities at all. I also have a Windows Home Server running and a beta version of "Vail", which is the newest version of Windows Home Server and all is good!

James,

I am running the cheaper version of W7 and Office 2003 works fine with it.

Ian,

Thats life, just thought I would check and see if you are close...

Next time. Off to Nashville tomorrow to check the pulse of the recording industry at a Mix show for a few days. Gonna get me some bar-b-que.

Oh, I wouldn't expect Office 2003 to have a problem, but we also run some older versions of Quickbooks. The price difference isn't much...
