So you buy X item for $100 use it for a year then sell it for?

Well if you're on craigslist the seller would list the 1 year used item for $110.

There is some dope smoking on that place.... I was looking at TVs and they wanted within 200 of what I could buy a NEW one with a Warranty for... I don't have time to watch the one I've got so I just stopped looking.

I love seeing Craigslist posts for Harbor Freight tools..."used once" and priced at or above HF retail. If bored, I send them a link to the HF website/price.

There was some stoge on CL Vancouver who wanted to buy a 911 and was only going to pay 13K for it and it had to be 98 or newer. He went in to great detail explaining how everyone thought that they wanted too much for their cars etc...... Cars in Canada are way more expensive, a late 80's 930 that sells for 33 to 35K in the states is 45+ at home. I was at work with nothing to do so I sent him a mail telling him a few of the facts of life in the P car world. Sorta reminded me of that loser last year on market place who was going to buy a 930 for "a summer car" for 7K, did he ever get roasted.

Craigslist is the inevitable consequence of an awesome idea (open/free marketplace) meeting the harsh reality that most people are absolute imbeciles.

Anything open to the public cannot escape this reality.

When I bought my 911 it came with a brand new headliner, still in the box from tweeks or mid America or whatever it was called back then.
But it was white and the original headliner was brown.

So i put the new white headliner on E-BAY. Brand new, still in the box, headliner for sunroof 911 from tweeks, part number such and such, original cost $59.95.

It got bid up to $110 I sheet you not.
them Porsche owners sure are dumb, they must be smokin somethin ........

point is, there are stupid people out there that have no idea what something is worth or what it cost and are too lazy to look it up.
These guys throw a hook out and wait for a fish to bite. A really stupid fish.
And you know what? If they wait long enough they'll reel one in.

On the other hand, I have picked up some fantastic deals on CL.

Got rid of some crap at decent prices also.

About 4 years ago, after my dad died, I found myself with about 12 CRT monitors. They range from 14" to 21".

I put them in the newsletter at work. $2 for a 14", $5 for a 21". (Flat screens were around $400 at the time.)

My inbox instantly filled up with buyers. The first guy who contacted me asked me if I would take $1 instead of $2. I told him I already had 50 offers for them, so no.

People do what people do. Who knows why?

Go to any "Cash Converters" here and you see stuff that was once really expensive being almost given away.
And cheap stuff being sold for what it was retail!

I love going into second hand shops and looking around. You never know what treasures you'll find for not much money.
The younger people here regularly go through the second hand clothing stores.
Vintage clothing from the 70s and 80s seems to be the thing right now.

I too have bought and sold on Craigslist with success. I get a kick out of the $150 Scotts Reel Mowers (used one season) or the people selling $4 items. If you are selling a single item for less than say $40-$50 is it really worth the time to use craigslist? I wouldn't even think about it.

Me too. In fact just about everything I need in the way of appliances and tools.

People complain about the cost of water heaters with low end models now selling for 400-500 at Home Depot. CL will get you a nice one, year old, for 150 because someone is remodeling.

Well, 2 years ago anyway because there was a lot of work going on. But, these days you can buy tools all day long.
