Experience owning an AUDI ALLROAD
Thinking about buying an 03 with 80k miles. Price is right - will I regret it with repairs in the future?

I don't have Allroad experience directly, but having an S4 with common mechanical stuff, I can say the 2.7T engine itself is wonderful and about as bulletproof as they get. HOWEVER, the other stuff on the car like various turbo plumbing bits, sensors, cooling system and so forth can have issues and run up some serious $$$ bills. It took several trips to the dealer over a long stretch of time to finally get the turbo gremlins out of my car so it would build and hold boost properly. Now it is fun and reliable but certainly not a cheap car to own.

I drove one with a chip and exhaust and I'll tell you for sure it was the fastest sedan/wagon I've ever driven. I am sure they aren't like that stock but a tuned 2.7 turbo is big time quick.

As a previous owner, I can tell you, avoid.
Air suspension will tank eventually, and you'll either pay to replace with coils, or to repair. Either way, it's stupid money to spend on an already not the least expensive to maintain. 18mpg isn't exactly nice for a commuter either. Avoid due to suspension.

I have an a6 with the 2.7 turbo and its a pleasure. 80k miles limited issues at best. But on the all road its not a question of if the air bag suspension will fail its a question of when. Its not a cheap fix either. PLus at the miles you're looking at make sure the timing belt has been done and probably the water pump too.

76k on mine now, no issues. Mine is low mileage for some of the other owners I know. It's easy to work on for me, everything is under plastic covers or behind the lock carrier but that's no big deal. I've done the timing belt and pump and such, it was easy. I have the 2.7 twin, will probably not ever get rid of it at this point.
It would be hard to beat it in the deep snow we sometimes get. You just raise it up a few settings and cruise right though. It's also a lot of fun going up on ramps and such with those turbos. I had a 2003 Jeep GC before it (this is the wife's car) and it was a complete mess. Was leaving the wife stranded a lot, the Allroad has been a great solution to that.

I'd bet a Subaru would beat it. IIRC, when the Allroad is raised up it is still only the same gnd. clearance as an Outback.
Does it have some magical AWD or how does it work? The Subaru is an incredibly boring car tho. |

I started to post on this earlier today, but I cancelled out of it as I always end up wasting too much time arguing with the Audi lovers here. I am pretty sure most here already know exactly how much I depise somewhat modern Audis.
![]() Besides, if someone decides to buy a 100k mileage Audi, that simply means there will be one more 100k mileage BMW on the market for me to possibly choose from someday. ![]()
