Another trip to the Porsche Dealer..uhg!!!

So, the wife is looking at new rides. She really likes the 650 BMW. She's had a couple Beemers and a Boxster S over the years, but I wanted her to check out the Panamera, so we stopped by the trusty dealer, Pioneer. I was hoping that the regular sales guy that's been there for the last 10 years might be gone, but oh no, he's still there.

We went inside to see one that was open and clean, of course it's next to his desk. He starts in on all the attributes. I mention it's for her and she's considering a 6 series. He tells me how that car isn't this or that, but the Panamera is. Ya, ya, ya. I ask about deals on financing or lease. He gives me the "yes we have deals, but it's all about the car". I say, well let's let her drive it. He says, well we close in 15 minutes and I'd rather set up an appointment for this week. What an idiot. If she liked it, we would've got it.

These guys must be selling so many cars they can pass up deals. I was pretty shocked. Personally, I think the car is a little big for her, but it sounds like it's very light @ 3800# (that's what he said). Told me a 911 weighs 3200# (sounds light to me).

Anyway, sorry about the rant, but these guys continue to amaze me. This guy in particular has done whacky things for the last 10 years everytime I've been to the dealership. Never the least interested in old Porsches or any that I've owned. Just has the speal down on the new stuff. I would drive across town to buy from the other Porsche dealer where they are a little more down to earth.

I figured with the recession and all these guys would be a little more earthly, but I was wrong. He must please most buyers since he's still around after all these years.

What is it about used car salesmen you don't understand? Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar or Hyundai, they all share the same DNA.

No, the Porsche guys are much more arrogant and disconnected than the BMW guys or any other "normal" brand for that matter. Atleast in my dealings.

He always gives these false numbers. He's so pathetic, I just don't want to call him on it. But he did explain how the Panamera was lighter than an M3!? I could be wrong, but I don't think a base 911 weighs 3200# either.

Base 997 weights around 3100 lbs. tack on a pdk or a turbo or a lot of options and you're over 3200 lbs.

Well I just bought a car from Dave Denham at Barrier Porsche in Bellevue WA, and my experience was the exact opposite. Dave has a background in contruction management, and it showed. Straight forward, extremely knowledgable about the product, and he came in on his day off to work on the deal. 100% satisfied.

I'm that guy dealers hate, because if I go to look at a car, I will know more about said car than the sales guy could ever hope to know. I'll tell the guy how the aluminum rear subframe castings are finish machined. The type of hall effect sensor the wheel speed pickups use. The amount of compliance-steer generated by the rear toe link bushings.

I see the guy come out and start heading my way with that grin on their face and I just think oh this poor bastard.

What is nuts is that they "close in 15 minutes". Any other dealership I have been to will be open until 1 a.m. if it means getting a sale. They will torture you to stay and finally sign.

I haven't bought a new car yet.

a Panamera or a BMW 650? Consider yourself lucky you left. OK, I know its only opinions, but mine is those are two of the most unattractive models that either makes. As far as salesmen go, I don't think you have to be a real "people" person in this business. Has anyone ever posted here about their wonderful encounter with a Porsche salesmen. These guys most likely have a short list of guys that they have to keep happy for their next sale. I would bet they spend a lot of time on the phone getting asked how things work in their car by owners too lazy to look in their manual. People dropping in just get in the way of getting these things done. I'm not sticking up for them. They make a good income, although I'm sure their working way over 40hrs/week. I wouldn't want that job.

I was just that way when I bought my 74 914 2.0. I knew exactly what I wanted and I knew way more than all the salesmen combined. Of course back in 1974 it was a VW dealership that sold Porsches. The sales guys did not know squat about Porsches. They tried hard to sell me a car from inventory, but I knew the options I wanted and the color I wanted. They had to order the car and it took over 6 months to get it to me. I picked it up on September 13th 1974 at 12:15 PM. It does not seem possible that was 36 years and 8 days ago.

Exactly why we are in business! Being relaxed and laid back goes a long way to building a client relationship. These franchise dealers always have the "skin the cat" mentality.

Well, you know what they say about opinions......She wants something bigger than her 3 series coupe and she loves Beemers, so the 650 is a natural evolution. We looked at the 5 and 7 series, but they are like box cars. The 650 is a great touring car (think San Diego to Prescott a couple times a year). Drives good, room for luggage, you get the idea. I thought it would be a great chance to drive a Panamera and if she liked it, she was in a mood to do the deal. I gotta say that if you are looking for a real four seater, four door the Panamera is world class interior. Better than anything we have looked at. The salesman, I'll never be able to figure it out.

I stand corrected. When you mentioned Panamera and BMW I immediately thought of the X6 and not the 650 since they are somewhat similar. The 650 is only a two seater so there is a big difference between the two, but I think it is a nice car. The resale values on that car are really, really bad though and I don't think it is selling too well. I have always been a BMW guy and currently on my 4th driving a 550i. I just happened to own an old 911 and that is where my connection to Porsche begins and ends. I do think the current 5 and 7 series are kind of plain and don't do too much for me either. I think Audi is making some of the nicest looking car lately. Again, I said "nicest looking", not to be confused with reliable.

The new 6 should be out soon. I'm not a fan of the current model but the new concept looks good.

...same with me. i walked into an import new car dealer, looking at a specific model. i knew EVERYTHING about the car. i tactfully corrected the sales manager on a few things he said incorrectly. instead of getting mad, he offered me a job on the spot.

i respectfully declined, haha.
