Ecclestone wants to make Porsche comeback happen

Bernie Ecclestone is prepared to do everything he can to encourage Porsche to return to Formula One in 2013.

"It sounds absolutely great," the F1 chief executive told Bild newspaper by. "Whatever I can do to make it happen, I will."

Porsche officials have already announced that it would only enter the sport as a fully-fledged team and not just as an engine supplier.

"If Porsche was to go to Formula One, then it would only be with its own team, because you need complete control over all the competition-related factors, including the car and its technology," development director Wolfgang Durheimer said. "Porsche is a very profitable company, we can afford that."

It is understood to be waiting until 2013 when revised engine regulations will see F1 cars fitted with 1.6 litre, four cylinder turbo engines. Bild said the board of Porsche's parent Volkswagen will meet early next month to make a decision.

Mercedes' motor racing vice president Norbert Haug said: "I have no idea whether Porsche are going to come. If they do, congratulations and all the best. If not, that's a shame."
