Interesting run in with crack head neighbor last night

My wife, daughter, and I were just settling in for dinner last night when my wife sees someone running down our driveway. I thought it was no big deal, that it was just our next door neighbor checking the garden beds down the driveway. No such luck. I hear our gate slam and next thing you know theres this guy in my back yard. He was a very large, very aggitated, and obviously high on something latino man.
He was wearing shoes, shorts hanging off his arse, and nothing else. I saw no weapons on him so I decided to venture out and see whats up.
I open my back door and ask "Dude! Whats up? Can I help you with something?"
He is pacing around and saying "I want this $hit to end! Call the cops! Call them now! Dammit! Oh God! I want it over......" (He is already bleeding from wounds on his fists and legs I noticed)
You get the idea.
I am a very calm person and don't freak out or over react to most situations. I told the guy "I don't care what you did but you need to calm down. What can I do to help you besides calling the police for you? I can help. etc. etc. "
He wants water. I go get him water from our fridge. (ice cold) The dude takes the glass and pours it over his head then lays back on my deck like he is calming down. (thats a good thing) I tell him I am going to go back in and get more water for him.
Mean while, My wife is on the phone with 911 and giving them the play by play.
I come out with glass of (ice cold) water number 2 and this guy decides to amp up again and take off. He hits my back gate (just like the door on American Idol) on the stationary side. I am yelling at him to STOP! Too late. He plows through it like its nothing. My wife's Benz is right on the other side of the gate. Luckily it did not hit her car.
He is off and running down the street. My wife is still on the phone with 911 and the neighbor a few houses down starts yelling at her "You better not be calling the cops you F'n B*t*h!" My wife just did a 180 and walked back to the house while still on the phone with 911.
Psycho dude mean while has migrated across the street and is pummelling the fence of another neighbor with his fists. You could see the blood spraying on the fence as he is going at it.
The San Jose PD finally show up and get this guy a couple blocks away.
I wanted to make sure that they new what they were dealing with and approached two of them to make sure they knew what happened.
911 never told them that there was a threat made on my wife's life or that there was property damage envolved! I was pissed! They came over later on to take a "proper report".
Both cops were top notch class! They took a full report, took photos...etc.
Turns out this guy is a regular with them. In and out of the system like a worn out record. "Drunk in public" blah blah blah Major repeat offender! They tell me he would be out on his own in 6 hours. I ask them "what if I press charges?" They say it would make no difference except make our lives miserable. I believe them because this guy is a gang banger piece of thrash and probably doesn't have two dimes to rub together. (except to get high) Turns out he lives 100 yards from my house! Him, I can deal with. His gang banger buddies, NO! I'm pissed!
This guy gets away with destruction of my property, intemidateing my family, and is set free to do it again tomorrow?!
One of the cops said I should have bashed his head in with the baseball bat I was carrying after the gate crashing event. Hind sight being 20/20 I should have taken it out with me at first sighting of this guy. I am not that kind of person though. I try to work things out in a peacefull manner in everything I do.

Here I am with a busted up gate and a lot of pent up anger over what "could have, should have, or did I do the right thing questions swirling around in my brain.
Here are some pictures of the carnage.

Too bad you don't live in a Free state ... 'cause you *know* they are exercising the 2nd even if it means breaking laws. You, on the other hand, actually care, and so you follow the law.

That's creepy, I hate stuff like that. We had a drunk gay guy in my garage from a bar that is in walking distance. My friend and I told him that his 'ride' was on the way. The cops hauled him away and it turned out he was a regular with them. LOL!

Another time a guy was running from the cops after a shooting at a nearby restaurant and was actually shot in the leg and bleeding like crazy. Helicopters and cops were all around. My neighbor found him in his car and he called me. He then called me and scared him away and when I got home there was blood all around my garage door and garage windows. I assume they caught him but I don't know for sure.

Getting ready to move if we find the 'right' place!

Why is this guy getting into it? Friends of this guy? Maybe I need to read more carefully.

Probably where the guy lives.

If you were to cap the guy, bros from his gang would be back to get even. Maybe if his house were to accidentally catch fire or something. Those drugged out MFers are not too carefull sometimes.

Lucky the wife did not park too close to the gate. Perhaps locks on the gates would help, rebuild it a little more stoutly too.

Wild stuff - glad you're OK.

Time to upgrade to a metal fence/gate?

If you went out with the bat, it would have turned physical. Would you have won? Next time, stay inside and call the cops while holding the shotgun.

I should have been more clear. Apparently this dirt bag lives a few houses away from me. The person threatening my wife was his girlfriend or wife. I am sure she is probably abused and scared of him as well.

I have lived here in my "hood" / house for 23 years. I'm not leaving! Our neighborhood is actually quite nice. No matter where you live, there will always be a chance for something random like this to happen.

Precisely! Thats not the way I roll. I always prefer the non-violent approach first. I think if I would have smacked him with a bat it would have only pissed him off. My familys safety comes first. Always!

I will try and snap a pic of the damage he did to his own home and post it up. I need to hit the road here in a couple minutes any ways. I'll post that up when I get to work.
I guess I will be Mr. Carpenter this weekend rebuilding my gate. Good thing I have gotten a lot of wood working practice in lately building my garden beds.

Sounds like the guy was suffering from cocaine psychosis or something similar... I think if I were in your position my wife and myself would be wearing some high powered stun guns on us at all times... would also keep some hard hitting pepper spray and hand guns in several secure but accessible locations... they make some picture frames etc for this purpose... good luck man, keep your family safe...
