Interesting Philosophical Conversation With Our Daughter...
Last night I had a very interesting conversation with our Daughter. I was tucking her in and according to her nightly rituals of reading stories, singing and making up a story she said “Dad, wouldn’t it be cool if you could open up someone’s head and control them!”
“That would be something but I don’t think I would like it much if someone did that to me how about you?” I asked. “Well, there are things in our heads that control us, like 4 things, they are like viruses but different. Much smaller. They are real small.” She said. “Huh…what do these things do?’ I asked. “They control language, the sounds in your head when you talk inside your head and to people. There is also one that is in charge of your emotions – you know what makes you feel happy and sad. There is one that makes you move around. And there is one that takes care of all your memories. They all talk to each other too.” “Wow, that’s very interesting. Let me ask you this, which one takes care of your heart rate or your eyeballs or your nose to smell?” “Well… (She paused) there are really 5 then. The 5th one is like a coach. He makes sure all the body stuff is doing its job right.” She explained. “That makes sense. I think you have it pretty well covered. What made you think of that stuff?” I asked. “I think of stuff all the time Daddy! I like to think.” “Well sweetie, I like the way you think.” “Now let’s make up a story! Give me three random words and we can make one up. Go!” “OK, Teapots, Crickets and Crocodiles!” I offered And the fun began… She is 7 by the way.

Nice. I have the same ritual with my 4 year old every night - books, stories, songs. She comes out with some wild stuff too. These kids are amazing.
I like the story based on 3 words. Great idea that I will institute tonight. Thanks. (BTW, this is my first post, been lurking around for a little while, learning about the 911 i plan to buy in the next year or two. ) |

Are any of those "things" named Sybil?
I'd think about locking up the cutlery and sleeping with one eye open. Arden used to freak me out. When she was 4ish she had her "pretend ones". One day my brother is over and we are sitting in the yard having a beer. My brother is sitting opposite me and Arden is standing next to me. He looks down at her, then over his shoulder and then back at her and asks me, "what is she staring at"? Arden responds, "those people right there behind you" There was nothing there but the back of the house. Creepy.

She sees them that no one else does...that could come in handy!
Late last night, I was down stairs and I could hear her talking in her sleep. Actually she was singing. It was cute. I have heard her use different voices when she talks in her sleep as well - thats freaky! She has a light soul. Her heart is fairy pure. Momma on the other hand is as dark as the night! She is the only person on Earth I fear...

Mike,
Daughters are, in my mind, a fathers best half, our female empath...especially if you listen, like you do. My relationship with my daughter, Arden, is exactly what I hoped it would be: she is smart, funny and adroit, and she tries to make me so.

Like most men, I imagined having a son. That did not happen, but I did have two wonderful daughters. Daughter-Daddy relationships are special. I still like little boys, but I am especially partial to little girls.
Lubey, your daughter is doing what I call "mental calisthenics." She's taking things apart and putting them back together. Breaking them down in to categories, for further exploration. Wonderful!

Supe,
You should rephrase your post. There are alarm bells going off at To Catch a Predator production studios.

One thing that she has started doing is we have noticed a blossoming of her creativity and work ethic as it relates to school as well as non-school scholastic projects. She has written reports and Power-Point presentations all on her own on a variety of topics ranging from pumpkins to toasters to leaves. The topics are ones shes asks me to 'assign' to her. She likes to be given a topic to explore. She uses the Internet to find out information, writes down notes and then puts them in her own words. She also creates presentations for what she has written. She will structure her presentations and add all sorts of pictures - both actual and cartoons and couple them with various facts. She is great at Google Images. Not to worry, she has from time-to-time come across nudes in her searches and dismisses them as if it was just an image that wasn't needed for her work. The funny thing is we have tried to get her to use these for any assignments she may have in school and she says pointblank "That would be cheating! I can't re-use work I already did!!!" So she sits down on her own and plugs away on my laptop (hers just doesn't have a big enough screen to get the slides full effect!) Well, she has more ethics than I do!

To rephrase, I like little boys......in a heterosexual, fatherly sort of way......but I am absolutley charmed and smitten with little girls......again, in a delightful, fatherly sort of way. In fact, I just like kids. Kids are cool. Kids and dogs are not the problem. They are fine. The problem is the grownups.

maybe she did read it somewhere.
it's just a bit off of some ideas in cognitive science; but it would be uncommon for 1 17 yr old to encounter that; surely not a 7 yr old... unless it was in a source that was extracted from other sources if interested you can check out agency theory, mostly notions by Marvin Minski - at least I call it agency theory |
