Seriously, though, I hope some of you are just trying to freak me out! |

I am guessing someone with insurance that has $5000 deductible makes pretty good money and that is what you wanted. I don't know, I don't think I know anyone with that kind of deductible.
|
My HSA deducible is 7k. Employer contributes ~$5400/year. If I don't use it, it's mine later. Anything over 7k is covered 100%.

after the pic, I might be tempted to raise my est. - they may well have done some other tests given that wound
best wishes on everything |
My guess is 2700. Good luck!

i'll say fifteen hundred.
that is a walk-in price. add another six hundred if there had been an ambulance ride. |

No, there were no other tests done. I was there the whole time. They just cleaned it up, doc came in, stuck in the staples and we were done. I'm probably naive, but I think it will be less than $1,000. I mean, seriously, I looked at my watch when we walked in the front door, and when we walked out. It was 50 minutes, and that includes filling out the initial paperwork (10 minutes), sitting in the waiting room doing nothing (10 minutes) and filling out the exit paperwork (a little less than 10 minutes). I just can't see how 20 minutes of medical attention, with no tests, no real supplies used (all that was used was some kind of cleaner, some cleaning pads, a numbing injection and 7 staples) can cost more than $1000. One thing I did notice, they never asked for any insurance or payment information until AFTER it was all over. I guess it's against the law to do that? If this ends up costing more than $1K, I'll know a lot better to just get the treatment, then "no habla english, vamanos amigos!" when it's done! I don't mind paying a fair price, but anything more than $1K for that amount of work is crazy. |
5K ish.....yer lucky you got in inside of an hour at the ER. I had a ruptured appendix and waited 4 hours.....went septic. THAT was 36K.

A few years ago, I had a minor incident that left me with 5 staples in my forehead (Note:they hurt far worse than the reason I needed them) It ended up being ~$1300, had a vet friend remove them for free a few weeks later  |
I am guessing about a grand.
Impressive how much it bled, wasn't it. |

I'm guessing about $3K. Just walking in the door rings up a bill of a couple thousand. You're not paying just for a doc to ca-chunk, ca-chunk, ca-chunk 7 staples in. You're paying for all the other equipment, expertise, and staffing to handle life-threatening emergencies (you know, because it's an Emergency Room), like heart attacks, strokes, trauma, dissecting aortic aneurysms, etc. If you just wanted some stitches or staples, going to an urgent care (like pharmacies, some are open 24 hrs/day) is a lot cheaper. If you got in and out in under an hour, count yourself lucky. There's no discount--nor surcharge--for time. Care is billed by procedure/complexity, not amount of time spent administering it.
ER treating staff (the docs and nurses) aren't allowed to ask you re: financial circumstances. It might prejudice their treatment. So they treat you...and then ask for that info. Obviously that's both good and bad. On one hand theoretically the poor guy gets the same level of care as the rich guy. But in how many other industries do you have almost no idea of cost prior to purchasing the product? |
I'm glad it was not as bad as it looks!
Here, the admitting desk person (whom I think is a nurse) asks about insurance while you are standing in front of them bleeding -- that's for a walk in; if they carry you in unconcho, well they wait. maybe it's a Calif. law not to ask? |
$75 Co-pay at a hospital, $35 at an emergency 24hr clinic.
Emergency room visits don't count against your deductible - at least ours doesn't. Ask me how I know? Our two little reprobates are at one or the other every other month... |
$2700$ includes the tetanus shot.
|
I'll go with the 3-4K estimate.
