7 stitches/staples in my boy's scalp - guess the cost.

He was goofing around with another kid, hit a trash can, got 7 staples to close it.

It was 9 at night on a Saturday, so had to go to ER.

We were in and out in around 50 minutes total (time from walking in front door to walking out). Saw doc for around 10, he cleaned it out, couple injections to numb it, and used a stapler to put in 7 staples to close.

We have insurance, but haven't met the deduc. so I'm sure we'll have to pay out of pocket.

No bills yet, I have no idea. So, let's have a contest! Closest guess wins.

$750

9dreizig 10-24-2010 06:00 PM

$5500

Whatever it is, call them up and they will negotiate a lower price.

red-beard 10-24-2010 06:02 PM

Oh and if you have insurance, ignore the first bill. Wait for your insurance to call them and push the negotiated price.

makes my guess... hmmmm... $3,615.99 (that's WITH a discount coupon)

don't know your city or state so it's hard to be too accurate

BTW - that's my guess for the total - ER doc & facilities fee, etc. all incl.

Staples
Cleaning Agent
Numbing shots
Probably antibiotics
ER Physician
ER visit

I will say $450-$500

Good luck

Next time just put him back together with some superglue.

slodave 10-24-2010 06:03 PM

Duct tape would have been cheaper.

Whatever your deductable is, that's why you have it.

Location?

You don't know how to sew?

Hugh R 10-24-2010 06:25 PM

Super Glue!

My guess is $1,750. I fell about 10 years ago and gave my self a 6" gash on the top of my head. IIRC 35 internal and external stitches. The ER bill was about $9,000 including an MRI.

One hundred million dollars!

From past experience, I know this one!!
$0 deductible, $0 out of pocket., and you'll never see a bill.

G50 10-24-2010 06:35 PM

This is in So Cal.

I hope some of you are kidding! I really can't see it being $3K+ for a 50 minute total visit and 10 minutes of doc work, no blood tests, xrays, etc.

But I really have no idea. I think I'd fight $3K tooth and nail, though.

Oh, believe me, I thought about it! I remember 35 years ago, my grandfather put a huge gash in his hand. Using his other hand, he handed my grandmother a needle and thread. Done in a few minutes.

If this had any chance of healing itself, I wouldn't have gone to the hospital, but there was no way.

What am I missing, why would you have to pay more than the deductable?

Gogar 10-24-2010 06:45 PM

$2400, but there will be an errant charge for $150 for some test you didn't get, so $2250.

gduke2010 10-24-2010 06:46 PM

$1400 , $200/stitch

I believe my deductable is by calendar year, and it is something like $5000.
