how to convince "french" bears not to go wrong....

yep snagged me one of the LAST new ones around here, MARLIN 1895GS 45/70's. screamed a deal. $539.00. yuck yuck yuck.

since we have the 1895XLR 24" w/ leupold and the nelson ford(thegunsmith.com) "butter" trigger/lever jobs, and the 1894SS .44 mag, and the 1894CSS .357 all having nelsons "butter" job, we decided since we are on a roll(cuz we can), find ourselves a devastating brush buster in 45/70 stainless.


already took it all apart and did the classic "q-tip" lube job and cleaning and racked the lever about 4000 times to loosen it up. now i have to go out(sigh) and SHOOT some rounds and loosen it up even furthur before dr. ford does another "butter" job on the action.

this one aint getting a scope. at 7# weight it is perfect for the juniper door to door searches in our happy hunting grounds.

my brownells list for todays order as we can leave nothing stock oem as we are OCD X a mill-yon when it comes to spoons and their function/accuracy:


1) stainless big loop lever so we look like and act like
"chuck conners-the rifleman". actually for cold weather glove use and big hands.

2) wild west guns aluminum mag tube follower-red anodized-zoomy.

3) chrome silicone mag tube spring to match extended mag tube length

4) wild west guns "bear proof" extractors

5) williams fire sights front and rear dove tails

6) brownells cut open front sight hood for light gathering for front fire sight

7)extended marlin mag tube to increase capacity from (4) rds per mag tube to (6) rds per mag tube. when completed we will have a total of (7) rds of devastating french bear equalizer rds. at our grubby lil curmudgeon fingertips.


essentially we are building it to marlin 1895SBL specs less the ghost ring sites and picatinny rail.

and that should make this into (1) damn reliable french bear vaporizer. please note the 325 gr hornaday leverevolution rd. we already swear by these on 3x4 bull elk's. incredibly accurate and flat knock them on their azz.


now for those of you who havent a clue whats happened to marlin................

north haven conn. plant is shuttered. everyone layed off. remington(cerebus capital mgmt) has taken them over. still no word on where plant is gonna end up.

how ya tell it was produced in north haven conn. is you will see "JM" proof mark on left side of barrel next to receiver.


i am on the lookout for a stainless 336 .30/.30. i dont need one, hell i got (3) 1894-1994 winchesters w/various barrels and levers right before winchester got shoved down the toilet by USRAC and OLIN and went out of biz.


but what the hell, another .30/.30 is always welcome. especially a stainless one. we always take in "orphan spoons".

Yeah, it's really too bad about Marlin. One of the last American gun companies largely machining from bar stock rather than going whole-hog into the investment casting route. We'll have to see what the future holds for them.

I've always preferred the strength and simplicity of Marlin lever guns over the Winchesters. Funny, my favorite bolt gun will always be the Model 70, but I just can't warm up to their lever guns.

Oh well, I have a Marlin for every purpose, and there are tens of millions of them out there. I don't see any trouble finding good ones at reasonable prices in the future. I'm sure there will be an initial panic rush on them, like there was on the Models 70 and '94, but once that subsides we should be fine.
