Do you think collectible cars will still be collectible in the next 20 years??

Do you think people will still go gaga over a Hemi Cuda in 20 years? If we keep our old Porsches stashed away for the next two decades , will they still be sought after ?. Or will they get lost in the history books as new technology replaces what we have now?

There will always be a market for anything old that was good in its day.

I think in the next 10 to 20 years the collector car market and the HD motorcycle market will hit the skids. Once all the baby boomers starting dying and thier kids flood eBay with Dad's cars and bikes it will get ugly. Sorry but the market has peaked.

Time will tell. Time is also short enough for me that I really don't care.

If I had to guess, I'll learn towards Milt's thinking. After all, there are cars from the 20's and even earlier proudly displayed at a concours. This despite the fact they would be terrible to drive on today's roads.

How to pick which cars will be in demand 30-40 years from now? Rots a Ruck!

I think the Muscle car market has peaked and a long slow decline is it's future. Exotic European sports cars having not spiked to unsustainable highs like muscle cars will not suffer a big downturn. IMHO

There will be a new crop of collectors long after us boomers have gone. The mere fact that the rest of the collectible market will go on and on will bring cars along with it. I don't see rare books, art, furniture or memorabilia tanking.

Muscle cars are even to me the dinosaurs of all cars. Ugly, heavy, not that fast and a terrible ride with no stopping power. Some might argue how did they become collectible to start with? I think the last time I lusted for a '57 Chevy with a HO SBC was when I was 20. I never wanted anything bigger.

BTW, if I jones for the ultimate muscle car nowadays, I just go to a NASCAR race and listen to what a 100 grand sounds like in 350 cu. in. Then I'm good for a few years at a time.

Back to the car thing: When there are too many in existence, value will suffer. Therefore, ex NASCAR race cars will never be a good investment, IMHO. There will always be an exception.

My daughter 28, my son 22 grew up with Porsches. They came home from the hospital in them. They took long Sunday drives in them. They love Porsches. Daughter and sil can afford any Porsche right now. Son on his merry way there too. Our kids will carry the torch.

Is there one 1976 Chevy Citation left?? Not that it was anything special, but did anyone ever bother to store one of them in some old barn?

There is one on the other side of the crescent from me. Probably about a 1980 and it looks as good as a Citation can look!
I don't care if the 911 is collectible, I just want to drive it.

All the buzz is about nostalgia...getting what you couldn't have when it was nedw because you couldn't afford it, etc. When people stop remembering and getting misty eyed, the market will die off. I feel the same about my 83 911 but don't lust for a 356...do you?

It comes down to us 30-50 somethings to teach our kids/grandkids about the way cars used to be made. With passion. I own a couple of W108 Mercs and my kids have always been around older Porsche's and Benz's. I just bought a W114 280E for my 15yr old. When I asked why he wanted that over a modern type car, his answer was: "are you kidding. I understand what these cars are about. It was at the forefront of automotive technology of the time, not to mention it's gunna look kick a$$ lowered and go like crap when I stick that Eaton on there". He's now got his friends coming over and saying that car rocks, so of course the old Benz is now uber cool.

So yes, there will always be a collectible market for fine and well loved auto's as long as we instill in the next generation what these old machines are/where about. I love cruising around in the W108. All types of people look at it and comment. Stop at a gas station and it will always pull a few chatter-boxes, but more surprising the youngies are always saying "beautiful car man".

My kids have been around as long as my 911's, but couldn't give a hoot about it, Porsche, or nice cars. Mom poisoned them on the idea of "that damn car", so nothing is collectable to them.

Young people have no passion for cars as the boomers experienced in the 60's - 80's.

Yes some high end cars will still have a market, but the days of BJ selling Cudas for a million are over. Old american hot rod iron is past its peak. The kids into cars are all driving ricers now anyway...

Sounds a lot like my wife. The concept of having a DD + the truck that's been in my family for 3 generations + a fun car is completely lost on her.

My daily driver is a 1986 El Camino. It is in very nice condition. It gets more comments than my Carrera. Last weekend a 19 year old kid working at Sonic just gushed over it. He wanted to know how long ago I restored it. I know he was 19 because he was born the same month that I bought the Elky. He was a car guy. He was driving a POS pickup that he drug out of his uncle's pasture. Some kids today just want an appliance car. But there will always be the person that does not want to drive a silver Honda. or it's clones.

My wife is just the opposite. She loves the 911, my motorcycles, etc. Even likes to drive the 911 to work every now and then.
