Sweet fancy Moses the tooth pain!

Oh my this is horrid. Need a root canal on an upper molar. I saw my dentist today and everything is scheduled but damn it this is some pain. He gave me some antibiotics and Vicodin but it's not even touching it. I'm seriously considering yanking it out with pliers, that's not even a joke. Accepting any and all suggestions...seriously please help me I want to die.

Step #1- Have someone drive you to the supermarket and get a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Also purchase a tube of topical oral "lido/nova/whatever...cain" tube of gel.

Step#2- Swish mouth with 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for 30 seconds+. DO NOT SWALLOW!

Step #3- Repeat several times, and apply gel. Avoid excess alcohol or anything that will give you kidney failure when combined with other drugs the next day.

Step #4- Call Dentist.

Not until the 19th

Vicodin was prescribed at one 5mg pill, I've doubled that and added 2 fingers of Irish Whiskey (save me the BS on that I don't care right now).. I am considering finding some crack to smoke...ok that was a joke...I think. Seriously this is insane.

Your best bet is to schedule an appointment sooner and get it started. If he can't see you tomorrow, your weekend will be looking dismal unless the antibiotics start working, usually 24-48 hours. I would call and politely asked to be seen. If not, he should refer you to an Endodontist that can see you if he can't. You can even call them yourself if he is no help. I see 2-3 patients a day that have the same problem as you. You tooth is building up pressure and there is no where for it to go but out the ends of the root. This explains the pressure at the root ends the the pain when you chew or tap on it. Best of luck.

Did the peroxide thing earlier and it did seem to work some...

I welcome kidney failure because then I will die, thus ending my pain. Tried the gel and it was pointless.

WTF? I had a tooth flare up not too many years ago and I called my dentist at 8:30 on a Sunday night, crazy with pain (his office answering mach. message finishes with an emergency # and he called me within 10 min. of recieving my page). He said he'd meet me at his office in 40 min. Turns out I needed a root canal, which he then performed.

I felt kinda bad calling him away from his family and thanked him profusely when I got up out of the chair, telling him how amazed I was that he'd come in for me. Thought it was pretty special, but he just laughed and said it's not at all uncommon and insurance companies compensate dentists quite well for emergency service (and that I probably wouldn't be quite as happy when I saw his bill if I had no insurance ).

He even phoned in for Vicodin for me to pick up at the 24 hr pharmacy near me on my way home rather than write a prescription so I wouldn't have to wait longer than necessary.

This ain't the case in your environs?

Bypass the dentist. The endodontist is the specialist in this matter. I know, I have had 4 root canals. I was fortunate to find one of the best.

My worst weekend ever was after an semi emergency appt. at the dentist for some pain. He told me root canal and sent me across the hall to make an appt. with the endodontist. I got an appt. for the following Monday and some medication. So, where was I headed that weekend? The freakin' mountains!!

I didn't give a thought to the higher elevation and what that would do to the pressure in the tooth. I spent 2 days sucking on a whiskey bottle. Even the hangover didn't hurt on Monday compared to the pain. I think puss squirted out of the tooth when he first drilled into it.

Lendaddy, wait till you get a good abcess in your jaw, due to previous "misproceedures".
Then the fit young dental student has to stand on tipitoes to puncture into it with the oversized steel needle. Envision your spine and legs becoming a flat titatium spring while you're floating several feet over the bed.

Then try enduring endo-pericarditis in your heart muscle for over a year, where you're too weak to stand up and every effort .

No wait......dont.

Do the hydrogen peroxide thing 3x day, and put the ammo under the carpet in another room. The rubber hammers are safer while trying to fall alseep.
You'll get past this.

Just went through 20 mins of hell, it was pounding. I literally put pliers on it to see if I could get a wiggle(not much). It's barely bearable right now but I was about to freak out a few minutes ago.

Save the tooth!

The center can be drilled and filled, but save the tooth.

I'm entering a moment of remission.....what can I do to maintain it?? I will not eat I will not drink anything but warm water. What else?

And to get scientific, what happens to relieve the pressure in these moments? Or is that not actually happening? Is it literally pushing past the nerve in the base? How can I facilitate/speed that up during my next moment of hell?

Can I apply something supercooled to "shrink" the tooth and momentarily increase the pressure to speed up the process? Keep in mind I'm not thinking right from the pain and drugs/

Just forget Oragel, oil of cloves, rinses, etx. These only work when you have a huge cavity that the nerve is exposed and you can directly apply it. I don't think this is your case. I have seen patient coming and and sipping cold water when the pain starts intensifying. Call early and get an appointment. Hopefully you have insurance and can get it done. Unless the Endodontist is fully booked, they don't like turning away the chance to Make $1200 for an hours work.

Yea, I'll be calling and begging in the AM. I do have pretty good dental insurance. What would it cost to fly you out here right now?

The antibiotic will help, but take Aleve (naproxyn), it works for me.

Your tooth is a hollow container filled with necrotic tissue of the dead nerves and blood vessels of the pulp. It actually can't even produce any pain and you could drill a hole right in it without feeling it. All the pain you experience is from the pressure at the ends of the roots pushing on the bone. It will keep doing this until you relieve the pressure by opening the tooth or until is res orbs the bone and the abscess finds an avenue to escape into the soft tissues. Usually you will find a swollen cheek or jaw. This occurs a few weeks after what you are experiencing. Time to close the office and have a glass of wine. Let me know how things go tomorrow.
