Another hairbrained idea. Audi TT quattro? Whats bad?
Found one on craigslist locally that is supposed to be in otherwise good shape, but has a blown head gasket. Almost 200k on the clock so figure just swapping the engine....
How much life is left in the rest of the car? Look at it, walk, or run like hell at $1500? |

My buddy got a TT when they first came out, turbo awd brick. Felt very solid to me, looked better when they first came out, pre-silly looking ducktail, which I would take off if it had one. Nicely finished inside, and it is essentially a Golf, so I would think there is a lot you could do, motorwise.

Having owner a tt years ago I'd have to say they a great cars. If neglected it may become your worst nightmare.....properly maintained you could see another 100k+. Last time I checked though, getting a used motor for one wasn't cheap and leaves too many open ends. You may be better off finding a running high mileage example for 5.5-6k. You'd atleast know what you were gettting from the beginning.

How many project cars do you need?
It is very unlikely you will be able to turn it for a profit. No one will want a 200,000 mile car with a different used engine with unknown miles. I agree with the other advice RUN!

Wasn't wanting to turn for a profit... Was going to get it back on the road cheap and drive the wheels off of it...
But the pro says run... I think thats what I'll do |

The 225hp Quattros are great cars, they stick to the road really well and are punchy enough. However, you are making a good decision on not getting a 200K mile German anything...

I still have my '01 225 hp TT and think it's a great car - though with growing kids I would gladly trade it for something with 4 doors and larger rear seats. At 40K miles I had the GIAC chip (program) installed and a Forge DV - that really brightened the car up. I'm now at 75K miles and beyond normal wear items (brakes, rotors, tires, oil, filters, etc...) the only repair items (knock on wood) are:
- Timing belt + related wear items - Dash pod (instrument cluster) rebuild - 2 brake light switches - 1 turn light switch I would be hesitant to buy a 200K mile Audi, BMW, MB, hell nearly anything other than a beater pickup truck. |
