Big day at work, we got an Oprah's ultimate favorite things nod.

Big deal for a small co.

Beecher's ???World's Best??? Mac 'n' Cheese - Oprah.com

http://www.beechershandmadecheese.com

And much thanks to phoenix_iii for letting me use his Slingbox for an hour so we could watch it early at the office!

And Edit: Sorta ignore the super tiny website with little to no info today, we did that for stabiliy purposes and it'll be better tomorrow or the next day when we put the real site back up.

Yeah, we have a little store in the Pike Market where they make all the cheese, and then we take some of it and make mac & cheese out of it.

Good stuff, the shipping on frozen goods kills though, so I'd say West Coasters should probably look for it at a grocery store first.

Over in Maryland unless you have a Fresh Market (few and far between) you might have to do the shipping thing.

Or just come visit, and it's my treat.

Yeah, we heard that too, but I can see what our traffic numbers are, and though I'm sure they are far lower, it still shouldn't have been a deal for a place that big. But who knows, sometimes issues are caused by a lone admin missing something as much as a big traffic hit.

I sorta call PR stunt on that one, but I'm cynical like that.

Buddy of mine had a black lab named "Oprah" years ago. She loved mac and cheese, too.

The $29 is for a couple of pans, and then tack the shipping on and it really hurts.

A single pan is about $13-14 in most grocery stores, some will do specials around $10-12 on occasion.

Its actually really expensive for us to make, the cheese itself it spendy (even though we make it) and doing small batches of stuff vs. large scale also makes a huge diff. It's a pretty rich side dish, not something you eat a bowl of as a meal.

But yeah, it's way more expensive than easy mac.

I'm in the wrong business. $70 for a 9"x 13" tray that serves 8-12? I'm not being critical in any way, I'm wanting to jump on that band wagon!

"World's Best"
Mac & Cheese
Size: 9"x13"
One tray, 4.5 lbs.

Serves 8 - 12

Price includes shipping to the Western States.*

$70.00

I know, we went back and forth about that over and over as far as how to list it.

The idea was to include some of the shipping to make it less shocking when you hit the cart. So either it's $30+ in shipping, or you sorta decide if you can go for it or not at the included price and it doesn't shock you immediately afterword.

This stuff has to be shipped in an insulated box with ice packs, and has to go overnight. The packaging and ice alone is $5+.

I think it's $40ish for the big pans in stores.

To break that down, <$10lb, not really that far off from higher end deli food.

And yes, I still agree it's expensive, but don't knock it until you try it.

We do give the recipe out too, it's not a trade secret or anything, it's in the cookbook and posted various places around the web.

What I did for my mom last year was send her the cheeses (they can go 2nd day w/ice) and the recipe, and she got her own noodles at the store and made it herself.

Congrats on the marketing coup. Expect a demand bubble. The real challenge will be maintaining it.

I was really just amazed by the weeping and gnashing of teeth as people got their gifts.

I can sorta understand being excited for a $2500+ diamond watch (several of which are probably now on eBay), but the ruckus over the brownie pan that made all the brownies edges was over the top. (Retail price $39 or something)
