Rare Lindberg footage on the solo flight to Paris
This is footage and info that I have never seen before.
Really worth watching. Joe A ~~~~~ Some comments on this great bit of history. 1. They had to stop periodically when towing the partially filled Spirit to let the wheel bearings cool down!! 2. Lindbergh wearing a tie!! 3, Note the small rubber hose connections on the fuel system. A note for todays builders!! The rigid construction and vibration caused the fuel pipes to crack at the flare connections, hence the short hoses to relieve the stress in the plumbing set up. Somewhere in my dusty memory of reading about the Spirit (Built in SAN DIEGO, my home town, in 60 days), one of these pipes cracked on the way to the east coast! Cheers & enjoy, John If you are interested in history and in the development of aviation this is one of the most unusual documentaries ever posted on the Internet. Win Perkins, a real estate appraiser who specializes in airport properties, has posted on his Web site a video he created of Charles Lindbergh's famous and risky take off in the Spirit of St. Louis . According to Perkins, this is unlike any other presentation of the take off footage. Perkins painstakingly assembled news footage from five different camera men who filmed Lindbergh's take off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island. He then mixed it with enhanced audio from the same newsreel sources. It is one of the most interesting videos I've seen. When you click on this address Airport & Aviation Appraisals, Inc. :: "When the Job Requires a Special Purpose Product" you see the cockpit layout of Lindbergh's plane The Spirit of St. Louis with Part 3 in the window. Don't click on it. Click instead on CONTACT icon on the left hand part of the screen and select Part 1 in the center of the screen. After viewing Part 1 click again on CONTACT, then select Part 2. Do the same for Part 3. At a time when we are taking safe and comfortable global aviation for granted, we cannot help but marvel at the spirit and courage of the pioneers of the past. Remember to click on "Contact" after each clip before you select the next.

I just emailed this to my dad. He loves this kind of stuff! We could spend days in the Air and Space museum.

That's good stuff, Joe.
Sometimes it's really important to re-examine events that shaped who we (Americans) are, and this is definitely one of them; it's both educational and sobering on many levels. I had the model when I was a little kid, was always awestruck that the plane had no windscreen, just two little side windows, amongst other features, but the historical photos of the cockpit and dash are really, really cool. Thanks for sharing!

Have to agree and flying, not to mention landing the bird with no forward vision would be tough. That said, the plane had one job and that was to fly a long distance, not comfort nor safety.
Lindberg did a excellent job of making it to Paris, especially with no sleep for days. Just hope that we can continue on in the same tradition in this great country.

Gene was a pilot in the US Air Force as well as for Pan Am World Airways. Lots of history there.
