LOL

They are ugly as hell and big, bulky, and heavy....but they do actually work, and work well. Especially for the money. Their 995 Carbines are actually really sweet shooters, and dirt cheap.

My brother-in-law and I were going to Parkerize his Jennings J22 pistol to practice, but we decided not to do that. I'm going to get everything ready next weekend and then hopefully Parkerize the M1911A1 the following weekend, provided the gunsmith is done sandblasting the gun by then. Hopefully, the gun will be reassembled and test fired on Easter weekend.

David,
Thanks for the Rig grease! I've been greasing up the guns and waiting for the Parkerizing kit to arrive and I hope to get the M1911A1 back this week from the sandblaster. My wife donated an electric roaster with a nice temperature gauge, so I can get the solution to the proper temp and keep it there for the Parkerizing process. I'll also be using a candy-making thermometer to verify the temps and I hope to have the final prep work done next Saturday, then Parkerize on Sunday. I'll plan on reassemblying the gun on Easter weekend.

My wife called and told me the Parkerizing kit arrived safe and sound and the gunsmith will have the pistol sandblasted by Wednesday, so when I head back home Thursday night after my work week here in Okemos, I'll start the prep work for Parkerizing this weekend! I'll take pictures of the entire process in case anyone else here wants to try it...

David,

I will be very careful! I'll do the Parkerizing out in the "man cave" (garage). I have very good ventilation out there, excellent lighting and some adult supervision (my neighbors).

You should receive your .223 Remington "care package" today!

Thanks for asking! I have almost constant low-level pain that I take Aleve for. Last night was difficult to sleep because of the pain. I'm still on the 300mg of Allopurinol and my SUA is 4.3, so I shouldn't be having this pain, if I understand this ailment correctly...

Back from the sandblaster...

I picked up the M1911A1 from the sandblaster this afternoon after work...

The darker spots are grease to prevent rust until it's degreased immediately prior to Parkerizing..

Back from the sandblaster...Pt 2.

More pics...

These parts didn't get sandblasted because the gunsmith felt they were too "fragile"...

I'll be home again tomorrow evening and I'll start the Parkerizing and take pics of the progress this weekend...

The only bad spot on the entire gun is on the edge of the slide, below the ejection port. The gunsmith didn't touch it, although I asked him to fix it if he could. He wasn't there when I picked up the gun today, so he must have decided not to touch the slide. The entire gun was sandblasted for $55, which I think is very reasonable.

Art, What are the reasons for the ventilation during the parkerizing? Noxious fumes? Acid?

If you were in Houston I would just let you do the job under our fume hood at work. Saves me every darn day from HF.

Please, please post pics!

Tom, Thanks for the kind offer! I read that the fumes produced are pretty nasty and can give you a headache, etc... so I'll be doing this in the garage. My garage is detached and at the rear of our lot. The whole thing shouldn't take very long, I just need to bring the solution up to the proper solutions slowly, then dip the parts for 10-15 minutes. I don't have the directions here with me, but I'll follow them carefully as I really don't want to screw anything up on this pistol.

You are going to use an organic vapors mask, aren't you?

Tom,
Yep, that's on my list as well as nitrile gloves...I have an "old school" surgical gown (slightly used) that I'll wear, as well. I'll look like Dr Frankenstein!!
