Question on returning a purchase

I called a vender and made a purchase yesterday afternoon, paid with VISA card. I called and cancelled the order when they opened at 9:00 this morning.

They said, no problem. Then said that it had already shipped and when I recieve it to contact them for an RA number and instructions for returning the item for a full refund (as per their advertising).

I'm suspicious that, besides my expense to mail it back to them, they are going to charge me a re-stocking fee.

My question is, can I write "Refuse delivery. Return to sender" on the unopened package and return it to the Post Office?

I've contested two other purchases (on-line purchases) in the past by notifying VISA and they contacted the vendor and the charge was removed from my account.

I'm also suspicious because when I ordered the item I was told that they are made to the customer's requirements and that that would take a minimum of one week before it shipped. So I cancel the order 18 hrs. after ordering it and it already shipped? When I questioned the person I spoke with this morning he said, Oh, this being the holiday season, we rush to service our customers.

Hmmm...makes me wonder if a lot of this company's income might come from "re-stocking" fees.

Any advice?

You ordered something. You changed your mind. You cancelled the order.

It would be a big douchebag move to refuse the delivery and/or use Visa to strongarm the vendor.

IF they already sent the package, it is your responsibility to return it. IF they were up front about a re-stocking fee, especially if it is made-to-order, you owe them a reasonable restocking fee.

Being a douchebag costs everyone else money.

The "it'll take a week" thing is to cover their butt, especially at this time of the year. Reality is they're probably ramped up and kicking orders out as fast as they can so they don't fall behind.

+1 to the above - you changed your mind, pay the fee and next time don't be so fickle.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do the RA thing.

The two past purchases that I had VISA look into were cases where I canceled services which I'd been paying for and the billing continued.

In this case, I didn't do my due diligence researching the item before ordering it and when I did, it was after-hours and I couldn't cancel until this morning. So, yes, my bad as far as that goes - but not fickle, and not a douchebag.

But if they charge me a re-stocking fee (they advertise "No questions asked, full money back guarantee if not satisfied", I'll definitely contest that.
