cat people; are your cats difficult to medicate and treat with flea stuff?

OMG!!

i break out in a cold sweat when my wife mentions the need to apply Frontline. we paper/scissor/rock to see who gets to grab the hellions and who gets to apply the juice. wife lost today. she got scratched up bad. i felt bad and pounced on the other cat. i go with the shock and awe, and really trap her up. i scruff and hold the body between my legs, and kinda straddle her gently.

one cat was relatively cool with it, but she learn the hysteria from the other cat.

man, cats are a PIA. dogs are easy.

what about pill time? hahha.

Wrap the cat in a thick bath towel, like a mummy. That's what I do when we need to get a syringe of medicine into her mouth. Not sure about flea stuff - we don't have much need for that.

Cats are easily distracted by food. Open and feed a can of tuna and you can do whatever you need to them.

I get better results using Advantage.

And yes I agree with Stomachmonkey.

Grab the cat by the scruff of its neck like it's mum would do then they go limp.
Kneel down and 'back' the cat between your legs, partner applies flea juice, cat meows and runs off......done!!!!!!

I do a combination of these.

My cat is very friendly, but does not like being picked up, being held or sitting on a lap. So, we capture her and wrap her in a towel. You then grasp the scruff of the neck and this hep the cat go kind of limp.

I think the flea medication burns on the skin, because she hates it. Pill are very difficult, but the grasping the scruff helps. You need to push pills down the throat, otherwise they will spit them out.

My cats don't mind being picked up, so it's never a struggle. They wiggle, but by then I'm done. Even when I have to put medicine down their mouths, I just hold 'em like a vet does (scruff of neck works well) and let them know (firmly but gently) I'm not taking any schit. Or you can use leather motorcycle gloves and something with long, impenetrable sleeves.

I have to use small dog frontline for a couple of my cats due to their size, that is always an adventure.

LOL, the vet has a set of welders (arc) gloves that are thick leather up to the elbows for dealing with situations such as handling wild cats. When I said I was bringing in my ex-wild cat Toby for neutering, one vet nurse said she was going to phone in sick that day and the other one showed me the welders gloves.

Our cat is an alpha cat and grabbing her by her scruff has the exact opposite effect as one would expect. She will go bat shyte crazy with fangs, spit, and razor sharp claws flying with reckless abandon. The groomer found that out the hard way last year trying to put her in a carrier. The groomer came back with heavy leather gloves the next time.

With the other cats that I have had growing up, wrapping the cat like a mummy in a towel has worked well.

Welding gloves work well for this!

Chainmail doesn't work becuase the teeth can get through the rings...

I must be lucky. I took in a stray and have seen him go ballistic with other cats so I know he can get nasty. He was dropped off in the middle of last winter. Not a lot of houses around me. When it comes time for his monthly bath I fill the tub with 2-3" warm water and he will just stand in there and let me lather him up and rinse him off. This winter he is staying inside. I do the Frontline once a month and he will just sit there; he seems to know what I'm doing.

How to give a cat a pill.

It's easy just follow the directions below.

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink 1 beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Open another beer Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Drink beer.. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw Tee shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Tie the little %&**#t front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for ASPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

If the cat lives in my house, it gets regular baths.

It is not negotiable. It is entertaining for my husband to watch, but it is not negotiable. All joking aside, the biggest issue with the bath is making sure you give them something in the bottom of the sink (or shower) to stick their claws into. A towel works well, but your foot/leg, etc., will also work just fine from the cat's perspective.
