Las Vegas stuff not to be missed?
Family going to Vegas mid March. Will be there for a Tastee Freez convention, staying at the Monte Carlo Resort.
What should I do while we are there? |
The car museum in the Imperial Palace is full of very rare stuff. Most of it is also for sale so it you hit it big you can buy something cool to drive home in.

Las Vegas stuff not to be missed?
The exit! SmileWavy And the buffet at the Belaggio, right before they switch to Dinner prices. |
My family and I were there in July and had a great time. The kids tell everyone they had the most fun running and climbing around the rocks at Red Rock Canyon. It is a nice loop drive with many locations to get out and hike, climb, photo. Hoover Dam is a must. Stratosphere rides. The kids got really tired of walking through all the Casino's so I would suggest maybe spreading the walk throughs out over a few days or picking the important ones if time is not on your side. Eat, drink and gamble.
|
Drive to the top of Mt. Charleston.
|
Hoover Dam is the biggest must and Red Rock canyon was also nice.
Belaggio fountain show. Rio world buffet. Sit at Belaggio sports book and drink for free while watching the game. If you want to gamble cheap sign up for the slot card at most casinos. Many will give you $10 in free slot play. My dad and I did this and it worked out great. We would walk the strip and stop at each casino. We'd sign up for the slot club, gamble with their money until the original $10 had been played then cash out what was left. We'd use that and the coupon book most casinos had to eat or ride some stuff. It made for a cheap trip and allowed us to see all the stuff. |
If you go to Hoover Dam on a weekend or holiday, you can expect to sit in traffic for hours. I couldn't even reach the Hoover Dam Bypass after Thanksgiving. Traffic was backed up well past Boulder City. I took the hazmat route through Laughlin.
Go see Valley of Fire, the best kept secret in the area. Try not to drive anywhere on the Strip. It's a huge PITA, especially at night. |
Pahrump. Which is where I think Tabs really lives.

A remarkable bit of history
Atomic test site museum The Atomic Testing Museum and the NTSHF - Las Vegas, NV |
I am traveling with my wife 3YO son and my mother in law.
I do not like to gamble and the noise around the casinos is probably not going to work with our son(he wears hearing aids). We will be in town from Sat. through Wed. or Thurs. My wife wants to see the Grand Canyon. How far a drive is that? |
Well obviously you must go see Tabdullah.
|
Close to 300 miles to the Grand Canyon and pretty iffy during the winter.

Buffet at the Bellagio is the best. If you go around 4 PM (IIRC) you can get the dinner buffet for the lunch price. It really is good. Also, up the strip a few miles from the old strip is The Nugget, Tabs and I went there, its the best primerib at the best price. Desserts are great.

Bunny ranch...
Oh wait, you said family...... |
is there a dance floor there made of glass..and people walk under it? i would roll around with my garage creeper..hahhah :D
|
Grand Canyon is FAR from Vegas. Closest point is probably that Sky Walk on the Hualapai Reservation, but they charge and arm and a leg. Zion is two hours away and also very worth a trip. If you go to the GC, try to get to the North Rim. Probably lots of snow there now, since it's at about 9800 ft.
|
How much snow are we talking about in mid march?
I really do not want to drive 3 hours each way to look at a ditch. |
is a pretty impressive ditch.
|
Vegas
I'm too don't like to gamble,
Definitely second the Hoover Dam, do the tour! also, if the budget warrants, the grand canyon via helicopter is in my top 5 things ever, my wife was so so so nervous before, but loved every minute of it! We did Blueman and O but some less well known shows during the day which were a hoot! (Dirk Arthur, my kids will remember forever) Have fun! Jeff |

Sorry, I miss old Vegas when shows were under $50 |
Red Rock, Hoover Dam, Rhyolite Ghost Town, Death Valley ( technically Cali.) Grand Canyon by air. Fremont street Experience ( the old strip) light show at night. New York, NY. The original London Bridge in Laughlin, NV it's quite a drive though. Three state border Utah, Arizona, Nevada again quite a ride to get to but you are nearly half way at Hoover dam.
Freemenot street and NY, NY may hurt your childs ears though. Then leave nothing else there. |
Swing by The Gun Store and rent a machine gun.

You are going to a Tastee Freez convention, why would you want to leave that slice of heaven?

On Oakely (N side of street, near the Stratosphere) just about 150 ft east of Las Vegas Blvd there is a Custard shop (Ice Cream) that has bin in biz since 67...he does 2 flavors a day and is closed on Sun Mon...to absolutely die for.
The Sundaes will blow you and your waist line away. |
Dim Sum..the Orchid Garden on W Sahara
Thai food...The Lotus Garden 657 east Sahara...this place is rated as one of the best in the USA. |
Walk in here...place a stack of hundreds on a table, announcing: "I'll give anyone the 8 in a race to 11". You'll draw some attention...:D
Tabby, you ever checked this place out? Las Vegas Cue Club | Largest Billiard Hall in Las Vegas | Established 1964 |

My folks used to live there, and about 3 years ago when visiting with my wife and then-3yo son we saw a Zappos shoe outlet in a little strip mall just south of the main strip. Of course my wife wants to stop at the shoe outlet, so while we're pulling around the shops I see a Bugatti Veyron! Then, I see another! Then, I notice that immediately next door is Lamborghini Las Vegas, and holy crap they had a Ferrari Enzo, Maserati MC12, another Veyron, a Spyker, and about 80 lambos packed in the back showroom. Also a sweet Miura and some vintage racing bikes in the back. Your wife will love you when you offer to take her to a shoe outlet. Then, just quietly slip next door (seriously, it's right next door) with your son and admire the machinery.

I don't remember the exact total, but I think it ended up about $60 each. This was 8 years ago though. |
I was there two mos. ago. It's insanely expensive and crowded now.
|
Free stuff: Bellagio water dance. Mirage volcano. Treasure island pirates. Nice trompe l'oeil in Caesar's Forum shops & Venetian Shops upstairs. Fremont Street Experience downtown. Red Rock or the much more incredible Valley of Fire which is further out.
I hate Vegas but I am typing this from my room in the Mirage . . . Ian |
Valley of Fire is about 40 min. outside Vegas on I-15 toward Salt Lake City.

Actually leaving tomorrow to head to the CES, consumer electronic show. Cannot wait? Tabs, you up for lunch Friday or Saturday? |
There was a chemical spill on the strip in front of the Win this morning. They shut the Strip & it took our guys 1 1/2 hours to get from the Mirage to the Convention Center.
Ian Sent you a PM Joe. |
Thanks for the ideas, we booked flight and rooms last night and are working on the itinerary.
