Free Mac OS X App To Invert Negative Images?

I'm looking for a free app for my Mac (PowerPC/Leopard) that will allow me to invert a negative image. I have some film negatives here, rather than do a traditional wet contact sheet, it would be easier to lay the negatives on the scanner and invert the image from negative to positive. But I don't want to buy an app just to do this. Is there anything?

I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.

-Open image with "Preview"
(that is the default image viewer on your Mac)
-Click on "Tools" in the top bar
-Click "Adjust Color" in the drop down menu
-Slide the Black level all the way to the right
-Slide the White level all the way to the left
- let us know if it worked.

Just thinking, your scanner software must have some settings.
See if you can scan your negative in 'negative' to get the desired result.

good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions, max.

I tried reversing black and white levels in Preview, it doesn't work.

My scanner is a Brother MFP, the scanning software is minimal and lacks a "negative" setting or any image inversion.

I've also tried scanning via Mac OS X's Image Capture and that doesn't have image inversion either. iPhoto also lacks that feature.

I downloaded a trial version of PhotoEdit (Mien Software) but it says "out of memory or corrupt file" when trying to open the scanner file which is about 36MB at 600dpi. I guess I can keep reducing the resolution to get a file that it will open, but a 35mm neg scanned at 100dpi isn't going to be so useful.

The Gimp (GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program) can probably do it

The Gimp will do what you want.

Open your original in The Gimp. From the menu, choose Color, then Invert. Save your modified image as a new file.

Thank you, all! GIMP has inverted the image for me, I need to play w/ contrast etc to make it right but I can surely figure that out.
