love these cars, been looking for a 2001-2002 for a while. Like the air lift suspension, but don't know about long term reliability. and I know nothing about that water stuff in the engine! they make a nice parts getter car and good in snow.

Get the lowest mileage version you can afford. The turbos can fail and often do. The air suspension can leak and leave you on the lowest level. The interior is top notch and everything feels solid. The 2002 I have is the best snow car I have ever had. It is just a good fun car to have in the quiver but I wouldn't have it as my only ride. I drove to the top of Jones Pass here in Colorado with it several times and it ripped up the dirt 4x 4 road. Spend some time reading the post on Quattroworld.com and you'll get a good understanding of what to look out for.

Search for the thread about Tim Hancock replacing the timing belt on his 2.7T A6. Allroad has the same motor. Be very afraid of any car that has twin turbos when you can't see either. Good cars, but a maintenance nightmare.

100+k on my 03' runs like a top, nothing has been done to it beyond tires, brakes, and the 70K timing belt. My total for maintenance and repair in 7 years is around 2.5K, the bulk of that being the 70k which was 1,100.
Thanks to the adjustable suspension I've never been stuck in the snow, and the twin turbo power is sure nice for those spirited freeway on-ramps. Mine is my daily driver in heavy traffic so it gets a beating. EDIT: Thread is worthless without pics. ![]()

Just talking with my Dad about my allroad, sold it 4.5 years ago, maint and long term costs were expanding. Besides, too nice of a car for my family to trash like we were.. Have fun, but don't be shocked if the repair bills get out of hand. If you are lucky, you can find one like Scott's..

stay away. Had an 02 in 06 with failing air suspension. They do not replace it anymore, even with the CPO, they just patch it. ghey.

Two of the best cars I've ever owned, the LR can take an incredible beating on and off road and it just keeps going. Not pictured in the photo and off to the left is my 80' SC, now that's a money pit.

I read somewhere that it is the only stn. wagon or crossover to complete the Land Rover course.
BUT I also read that the highest the air suspension will go is still not as much gnd. clearance as a Sube Outback... ??? |

If you have a VAG-com you can set the heights where ever you want them. I did put mine in the ditch once, put it on the highest standard setting and backed right out.. It is also speed sensitive, so height adjusts downward as speed rises and back up again to 3 when you slow down. It's a great car, when it stays together.

I would buy the 4.2 liter V8 unless I had to have a manual.

I was trying to think about the negatives to mine, and this post just made me think of one. The 2.7T with the auto/tiptron transmission is what I have, and there is something that's refereed to as "tip lag." It's supposedly a fuel efficiency program in the transmission, but sometimes you notice what is a bit of a "lag" under certain accel conditions.
It's not that this bothers me really, but I'm 100% sure the six speed manual would have been a better choice.

Love them!
Almost bought one. Ended up with a A6 2.7t sedan. I always believe a good extended warranty is a must if you buy used. That would take care of any worries you might have... Calculate it into your budget..

fwiw, the Cayenne ground clearance is 8.5" to 10.7" (adjustable)
fwiw 2; I was, and continue to be, stunned by how good the Cayenne is. --and I'm picky. ...if you haven't noticed. ![]()

They're great cars. I drive the sedan version the 2001 A6 with the 2.7tt motor and manual. The allroads have come down quite a bit in price over the last 18 months. The biggest issue is the air suspension, its a question of when not if on the airbags in the suspension. I suggest a good after market warranty. Other than that they're cool cars with a cult like following.
