Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For 2010
Artile here.
My company made the list! #49 - Mercedes-Benz, USA. Been here 11 years - hoping to stay here till I retire. I've had the opportunity to learn and develop so much at MBUSA. My responsibilities have grown a lot - from a mainframe storage admin to a storage architect that soley handles not just the mainframe portion of storage, but open systems (UNIX, Wintel, VMWARE...etc) SAN storage as well. Started with ~5TB, and now I'm responsible for nearly 200TB of storage. Love the fact that I have constant opportunities to get my hands dirty with the new technologies in my field. Oh yeah - we make some nice products as well.... ![]() -Z-man.

# 20 Chesapeake is just down the road from my office. I don't work there but I know a lot of folks that do. Chesapeake is one of our better customers.

They are a fairly large customer of where I work. I saw them and Devon, and I thought to myself...."That's where I want to work!"

Devon is putting up a new downtown office building. It will be way bigger than anything else in downtown OKC. They are good customers of ours as well.

Wow, I'd love to work for a company touted as one of Fortune's 100.
Hmmm...let's see, 100 resumes to 100 companies... Someone's bound to call back, don't you think?

Thanks... was just joking. I'm happy driving my 911 to work 30 miles away (New York Life in Sleepy Hollow, NY).

I worked for #3 Wegmans for 5 years. Don't let the list fool you. The amount of crap that goes on behind the scenes is the same there as in any other company not on the list.

Crap is fine as long as benefits and more importantly, job security is there.

I somewhat agree. My company is not on the list but most workers have been there for decades.

First time in many years that Valero didn't make that list.
Maybe it has to do with closing plants and cutting a whole bunch of jobs. I used to work for them years ago, I didn't think it was one of the best companies to work for when I quit. They tended to use salaried employees like dogs, work em until they were burned out. The year I left I had worked over 3500 hours all for straight salary with no comp time, no thank you. It was part of the job. I asked my manager one time if the supervisors were ever going to get the 4x10 schedule. ha said: "why should I give you 4 tens when I already get you for 6 twelves for the same price?" I don't put much stock into that report. BTW I walked out on a Monday morning. I was on my way home about a mile from my house when my cell phone rang, it was someone I knew from the industry. He said he heard I quit, I said yep. He asked what I was going to do, I said I don't know yet. Maybe retire. He said they are looking for a superintendent to run their So Cal service center, I said I'd be there in the morning. I got another call that night from another refinery offering me a job better than the one I walked away from. Being able to walk away from what most consider a great job knowing another will pop up is called freedom ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 01-22-2010 at 11:27 AM.. |

I'd rather have a job with little crap that paid less with less benefits than a job with tons of crap and more benefits. The stress walking into a place that treats some people differently than others for reasons they won't admit isn't worth it. Constantly fighting an uphill battle makes your life miserable.

IMHO, the right job is a combination of:
1. The right benefits: 401k, salary, health, pension, stock options, as well as other company 'perks' like flexible work hours, discounts on products...etc. 2. The right management and people to work with. 3. Matching your skill sets with your job responsibilities. 4. Having opportunities to grow within your area, your department, and the company. 5. A manageable level of stress. If you have three of the five from my list above, then you'll want to stay with that company. Anything less than 2 of those, and you gotta leave, or you have to make a move within your company to make the situation different. Right now, in my position, I have all five of those pretty much fully met. I could do with a little less hours on the job... -Z-man.

Problem is, that list seems to be an increasing rarity in the job world. Or, everyone and their mother is competing the few jobs there are with benefits like those you listed.
