New Addiction

Goldeneye 007 for the Wii.

I was a HUGE fan of the original Goldeneye on the N64. It turned into a blood sport in college. Four-player matches nearly turned to blows several times. It got so heated that the four of us roommates had to declare a truce and didn't speak of or play the game for several months. Most of the disputes were centered around the fact that I had figured out how to aim up slightly, meaning that I would "head shot" other players while they blasted away at me. I was accused of cheating. (It was only cheating if you played Oddjob. )

I bought Goldeneye for the Wii when it came out on November 2. I never buy games when they first come out. I played through the single-player game to gain experience with the controls, then I went online.

I've played for close to 36 hours online so far. I hear the game is a lot like Call Of Duty, Black Ops, but I need another console like I need a hole in the head, so I won't be playing it, no matter how awesome it is.

You actually have to aim the Wii remote at the screen to aim, so there is a level of physical skill and muscle memory involved. There are two methods to aiming. There is a cursor on the screen that you can aim at a player (called "off the hip" aiming). Or you can hold down a button to "aim down sights"--which is more accurate than off the hip, but restricts your movement and makes acquiring a second target quickly impossible.

I've played every game mode (that I've unlocked) and leveled-up every gun (that I've unlocked). I've figured out the tricks of every map and every game mode. For example, it's really easy to win at "Heroes" if no one on your team volunteers to be the hero. (You get points for killing the enemy team's hero...so if your team doesn't have one, they can't score.)

You can level up weapons, you can earn "accolades" for doing various tasks (like eliminating enemies by shooting mines or having the most reloads in a game). I'm chasing them all.

I love to camp in a perch and eliminate other players with my silenced sniper rifle. (When you pull the trigger and eliminate another player clear across the map with a head shot, it's pretty sublime. The Wii remote even shakes to simulate recoil.) I also love to hunt down those @$$holes who just sit in a perch and eliminate other players with their silenced sniper rifles. I love doing "off the hip" shots with the shotguns. I love my silenced AR15-it's a good compromise between the accuracy and range of the sniper rifles and the speed and low recoil of the submachine guns.

Sometimes I'm aggressive and take first place in a match. Sometimes I get caught up in a minor task (like leveling up a pistol--they all suck, so you end up dying a lot to get very few eliminations).

I'm having a lot of fun playing this game. Is anyone else playing?

I remember the original N64 game, if I had a Wii I'd play the new one. I'm pretty good with the Call of Duty games. Right now Forza 3 is my addiction.

I haven't been here for over two weeks because I've been saving the world from a Nazi Zombie uprising on COD Black Ops for the Wii. Haven't even looked at the actual game, just the zombie side missions . . . have never been this attached to video games . . .
