The Porscharu is back

I was looking at Porsche classifieds on Craigslist like some sort of addict (maybe I could get a 964 or Boxster for my DD to supplement my weekend 911 in the garage, then I could drive a Porsche every day!), and I stumbled across this. I remember the original thread when this car was built.

Take a look:

1978 Porsche 911 SC Subaru EG33 swap

But how desirable is it the way it is?

From what I remember the engine cost $400!

If one had a 911 roller, how difficut and how costly would it be to do this, I wonder?

Difficulty = 10 or 11. There are kits available to make it easier but you still have to cut the body for the radiators and stuff.

Cost (guessing)

1. A good 5.7 liter Corvette Engine = $1,500 (in the USA)
2. A good 930 Gearbox = $4,000
3. The rest = $2,000 to $4,000

$7,500 to $9,500 + the cost of the roller... Not bad for a very fast car.

I don't think you know how lucky you guys are to have good "rollers" sitting in breaking yards screaming out for some attention.

356/912 engines are painfully expensive for a real rebuild

He did cope a lot of crap for doing it... I'm not sure it was justified. After all it is his car.
From memory his main justification was because of the cost of rebuilding an air cooled 911 as opposed to buying a low millage Subaru engine for $400.

I'll see if I can find the thread.

Are you crazy? Subies work very well in a spyder. NA 2.5 are 175 ish hp with no drama. With good exhaust they even sound pretty cool. Then there's turbo...mmmm....turbo....

So what is the dealio on doing this?

Because it is less expensive that a Porsche engine?

This from a guy who looked at a 911 Buick V6 turbo conversion.

I have a very good roller in need of a strong engine without the need for spending 3-5K on a crapshoot engine. That would be my dealio. Time to read that other thread (thanks Peter!).

You're welcome but if it was me it would be the 5.7 liter Corvette engine.
