What good comes from being here?
I mean on Pelican forums. I've got 6716? posts and I'm starting to feel guilty about the time I spend here. Yes, I've learned some things about my car, and yes I suppose I've learned a few things but how much time have I pissed away.
If my wife knew how many posts I have she'd probably have a **** hemorrhage. |
Good question. The answer can only come from asking yourself what you'd be doing if you WEREN'T here. And it's not what you COULD do it's what you would do. If you'd be doing hookers and blow or otherwise being a hooligan, then this is the BEST place you could waste time. If you'd just have some other hobby or watch TV, then it's a wash. If you would spend quality time with your family, then....

Be glad you're not Charlie Sheen! :D
I like the interaction on the forums. Many topics. Good knowledge. Shared experiences. I just found out from my eye doctor that having the TV on while browsing OT actually strengthens my eyes. The change of focus from close to far is like exercise! KT |
fellowship. OT is the original social network.

I have met some fantastic people and I do not regret the time I've spent here at all. I have tried to meet as many Pelicans "in person" as I can and I have never been disappointed. I've learned a lot as I've lived vicariously through the adventures posted here.

Well, it does make me laugh and most of the time I'm on the net my wife is as well. I've been here since I retired. If I had found it before I had retired I probably would have been fired.
Other forums just don't seem to have the personality PP has. I never expected to have this many posts and see no reason to stop. I can't afford cocaine and since I don't drink, I suppose this is a pretty civil vice. |
Much good comes from almost any membership. With Pelican, I particularly enjoy the challenge of maintaining my honor knowing that I am anonymous. Concluding that the intellectual challenges are enjoyable and beneficial to almost everyone here gives me hope. I believe these forums' memberships include some pretty darn high acheivers and critical thinkers who are often passionate in their beliefs. This place hones my thinking.

I'm probably right behind Hugh in the number of folks here I've hung out with in person. It's a great network. I travel a lot and usually meet up with the local Pelicans wherever I go. Sure beats drinking alone.

I probably spend too much time here as well but...
I've met some great people from here as well as being able to discuss most anything with the group and getting insightful replies. Heck, you guys are like extended family!!SmileWavy |
While I've only met one Pelican (Onlycafe), I would look forward to meeting others. It is a fellowship and I don't think I've ever gotten bad advice, everyone seems to be very helpful and yes, there is a great deal of knowledge here. Even if we do not agree, most concepts are well founded. With the possible exception of some of the stuff in PARF but that's to be expected. Politics is a nasty business.
I met Onlycafe at his place of business (good guy), we don't get out much in upstate NY. I have also sent a few PM's to folks asking for assistance and I will say all replies were knowledgeable and detailed as well as friendly. This place really amazes me at times. Don't think you get the full picture until spending some time here. |
Targe911s is right. In fact, your question reflect the age-old Philosophical Question #1. The question asked in Eclesiastes. If you had spent your life building massive monuments, what permanent impact would you have? None, actually. So then, the purpose of life boils down to one of two things. Either we are here to reconnect with our origin (God), or life is essentially pointless but for the fellowship. Of all the temporary, pointless things we might "waste" our time on here, the most meaningful and sensible is the fellowship thing.
I like this Pelican community. I like it a LOT. I have for many years now. I'm not going to leave. |
Look at it this way...you can always switch over to porn when Dipso is around....at least you will get some satisfaction with porn.
|
wait, I thought we were here to promote evil, not do good. All my plans dashed...

I've pondered the impact of the time I've spent here but it has enriched my life, no two ways about it. It's a community and a fraternal organization in the best sense of the word, IMO. You can choose how much or how little to participate in it, how much or how little to share about your life and yourself, who to connect with, (or not), etc., etc...
I am constantly amazed by the quality of people who post here when I meet them in person. I could go on for hours. No one would believe it if I told them, so I don't even try... |
This place has been good for me, I just bought another car because of it and I am sure Pelican will get to sell me more stuff. I haven't been buying much lately but I bet when the new car gets here I will be able to help them out. The Pelicans I have met I liked and all that I have had more private conversations with I liked. It is mostly fun and keeps me out of the beer joint in the harbor.

I came to PP Forums originally because of the Porsches For Sale forum. I then migrated to the other tech forums and then finally to OT.
I would argue that the "median IQ" and "median Common Sense" level is several notches above what you find in the general population. I find the guys here (other than that idiot in Chicago) are great guys. Even the ones whom I usually disagree with. I like it that people on OT are not only able to state a differing position from mine, but are intellectually equipped to defend or advance that position. The guys that I work with only want to talk about work. (40-60 hours a week of Cop Schit is not enough????? Do we really need to talk about a pursuit that happened a week ago, while in my backyard having a BBQ????) I would be proud to have any Pelican as a neighbor, and many Pelicans as a relative. That about sums it up. |
Sometimes you just gotta go do something else.
Then come back when you feel like it, nothing wrong with that, we're not all married to eachother. |
You mean you don't get your writing fee check every month? You need to call and complain.
