It's called star power Markus. Katie Couric (news personality) was on a crusade to make it a covered service to the congress since her husband died of colon CA. Votes & hysteria, not science (or continued debate about what is appropriate which is what this falls into)

Had my first one last month. The prep (crapping water) is the worst part followed closely by how friggin hungry you will be. The procedure itself...I do not remember, just waking in the fart ward after.

Thanks, Peter. I just wondered, as screening in general can be a tool with many complications. Not least statistically.

I remember getting a lower GI once. They made me drink gallons of barium on an empty stomach. After it was over, I told my wife I was starving so we went to a Perkins. About half way through breakfast I had to GO GO GO! There is a Perkins bathroom somewhere in Clearwater Fl that now has a half life of about 500 years, and you don't need to turn on the lights.

In the facility at 07:45, on the table at 08:30 done by 08:45, recovery until 09:30 and home by 09:45. Demerol and Verced, awake the entire time, no pain or discomfort. Two small polyps that he removed and said looked benign which were sent to the lab. Back in five years. Can't drive for at least 8 hours, although I feel fine. Blowing a little air. Making sausage, hash browns and eggs for breakfast.
If you're over 50 get it done.

You guys are lucky. When I had my last one, they went in just so far and had to stop because of diverticulosis. After that they sent me directly to another unit where they stuck some pipes & tubes up my a$$ and pumped me full of air and barium (I think) and did X-rays. The deflation was definitely better than the inflation.

ok. i've heard chatter about me getting in there early. massive die-off on my dad's side has raised a few eyebrows.
this "drink". i need more details. does it taste like crap? and when the event happens, is it like cramping bad? or you just going and going, painfree? i dread this. on a side note..remember all the BS about humans beings carrying pounds of stuff in our system for years..doesnt this procedure shut them up?

The drink isn't pleasant or unpleasant - at least for me. I didn't think it would be possible for me to drink all that liquid and was amazed when it all went down. I think I dropped 3 to 5 pounds by the time I was entirely cleaned out.

While Peter's response is amusing, it is not accurate. This has been standard of care in US since before Ms Couric was on television.

The 4 liters you have to drink over a 3-4 hour period starting at noon the day before. They give you a choice of flavor packs cherry, orange lemon-lime, etc. It doesn't taste bad, just doesn't taste good. It starts kicking in in about and hour and they you're running to the can about 20 times over the next 6-8 hours. You really want to stay at home and have more than one bathroom in the house, in case someone else is in there. You get anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds warning. You start it at noon so that by bedtime you're really over it and can get an uninterrupted night of sleep. You can drink tea (not coffee), chicken broth strained fruits, but nothing red or purple. Its like pissing out of your butt, no cramping Moist disposable towelettes help.
Right now, less than two hours after I feel just fine. Between yesterday morning and this morning I dropped 2.6 pounds. I think the myth about pounds of undigested food in your gut for years is just that, a myth. I can tell you for a fact that there is nothing in there now, and I have the pics to prove it!

You guys should fly for a living! We "get the finger exam" every six months or min every year, at any age.
Need to do the "rotor rooter" exam myself, thanks for the reminder. Joe A

At the ripe old age of 44, after a 2 week stomache ache I had to have 2 of these this year.
Then had to have 13" of colon removed to save me. Do it. Your family will appreciate it! ![]()

I turn 50 here in a few more days. My doctor already told me that I go in for one then. Have been checked with the DRE more times then I care to remember.
Glad you're doing good Hugh.

It sort of tastes like flat club soda notnawful but not refreshing in any way. You have to drink about 8 oz every ten minutes or so.
