Tell Me About MB G-Class

Saw this for $12K with 79K miles and wondered if there were worse ways to spend money. That is, of course, unless working on these things is comparable to some of the other "exotics" discussed here.

Are these things bullet proof like the old MBZ of yesteryear, or prone to frequent, outrageous catastrophies that no one can afford to fix?

For me, it would just be a 4th vehicle toy, so no need for daily driver reliability or anything. And all work would be DIY, if that is remotely feasible on these things.

Rust is the main problem, they rust really bad inside and out if they are exposed to salt or neglected. Mechanical parts are expensive if they are needed. If it is genuinely rust free, and it was imported properly with documentation, the price seems good. What model is it? Gas/Diesel? Man/Auto?

I love them, and have read that they are robust and reliable with good (although mostly overseas) parts support. I've been chasing a diesel one with the 24v DOHC om606 engine.

I heard that the canadian military will be selling off their fleet within a couple years... mostly diesel.

The one pictured is a "diesel conversion". It is on eBay, but I just noticed that it says it has "major rust on all body panels". Hmmm...didn't look that bad in pictures.

If there's major rust anywhere, it could be everywhere. Are those galvanized frames?

It's been on eBay forever. Even if we lived to be 200, life is way too short for rusty schit-boxes like that. A nice older G-wagon, OTOH, would be sweet.
