Haggerty insurance turned me down!!
Applied for coverage now that the car is 30 years old. Ok, just a few questions on line and I save 50% off my normal premium. Great! Then they called. I put down that I drive about 3000 miles per year when the weather is nice and I do have a daily driver. Also, work is only 3 miles away. They say that's too much like normal driving and there policies are for only classic collector cars only driven to car shows and events. So, is there other insurance companies out there for my "classic" car?

The '74 is insured with American Collectors Insurance. Been with them a bit over a year, very reasonable rates. No experience with claims but USAA which insures my other vehicles recommends them.

I'm going through this right now, to insure a 20+ year old Ferrari and 20+ year old 911.
I've called all of the collector insurance companies and gotten quotes. I'll post the results later, but yes, Hagerty is "car shows and parades" only, NO DRIVING TO WORK ever. American Collectors was by far the highest quote that I got out of 7 or 8 companies. Leland West, with PCA discount, was the lowest. Less than half the cost of American Collectors for the same coverage. |

McLovin: Try AAA. 5K miles per year. Agreed value. Must be garaged. OK to drive to work. $307 for the 930; went up from $250 last year (through no fault of mine).

Not sure about your particular situation, but for my antique (73 years old!) JC Taylor has been great.

I've been with Hagerty since 2004. Never had a problem but never applied on line.
Hagerty was never intended to insure cars you drive to work.

I'll call them tomorrow and post my quotes/results for Hagerty, Grundy, Leland West, JC Taylor, Heacock, American Collectors, State Farm and AAA. Some of them are strict "no drive to work ever," others allow some driving to work. |

I insure all our vehicles with AAA. The 930 used to be insured under a regular policy as well. I think we were paying about $1600. So one renewal period a couple year ago I asked if there was a collector's policy. Sure enough there was. Out of curiosity I asked about the stipulations. 5K miles per year, OK to drive to work, must be garaged, they later come out to give the car a once-over to make sure it fits the agreed-upon value. "Two fifty," the agent told me. I thought he was talking about some sort of down-payment. Or possibly how much per month. No, per year he assured me. I immediately wrote the check. The daily drivers are still insured under the normal AAA plan.

BS not to be able to drive your classic to work or to the ice cream parlor once a week. I gave up on the Hagerty deal long time ago and just insure through State Farm. Too high a risk that they turn down a claim if it is for Friday 7 am or Saturday after dark ...

I wonder why is it that these sales people lie to us about not having classic car insurance? do they know that it is long term business? |

Screw them, too many restrictions....get quotes from the majors and live with it. The minute you do something not allowed is when you get whacked by some soccer mom texting, sipping a latte and doing her nails.

I have Hagerty. They allow me 6000 miles per year. I can drive to and from club events, shows, pleasure driving... basically, it's no "work" and 'errands" and "shopping" stuff.

Have a "stated value" policy thru state farm for the 356... cheap, no limits on driving, there is an agreed value of the car if it were to be totaled...

State Farm insures my 1978 SC.
I pay $124 per year for agreed / stated value coverage. If I remember correctly, I am allowed 3000 miles per year, to "car shows and events" but no DD use.

We do a fair amount of classic car coverage in our office. This pretty much sums up how they all work. In short they don't want the car left un-attended in an insecure location for extended periods of time. If you are out for a drive and stop by your work to check your messages and the car were to get hit they would be OK with that. They don't want it sitting in a shopping center parking lot for two hours where a cart could could roll into it. That they wouldn't be OK with.

Stated Value Policies: Stated value coverage pays the cost of repair to the car or the stated value of the car, whichever is less, at the time that a claim is filed. There are a number of problems with this type of policy: • The stated value is actually used only to determine the premium level. The higher the stated value, the higher the premium. • In the event of a claim, the language of the contract allows the insurer to set an actual cash value instead of paying the stated amount as the insured party was given to believe. Essentially, the company accepts the owner's stated value at the time the policy is issued, but does not issue any formal agreement with that value in the event of a claim. This gives them considerable leeway in honoring the benefits of the coverage. It's a rule of thumb in insurance that the company will always pay the least amount possible. Agreed Value Policies: Agreed value guarantees a set amount of coverage agreed upon at the time the policy was issued and is generally accepted as the best position for the owners of classics, unique, or highly modified vehicles. It carries a number of advantages: • Allows the driver to secure and present a professional appraisal of the vehicle that they accept as a valid representation of its worth. • Unlike standard insurance, the value of your car does not depreciate over the life of the policy. • Is the only type of coverage that guarantees the owners will be paid in full in the event of a loss. If buying collector or limited use coverage, make sure you have Agreed Value. Tim |

I wonder how this guy is getting around to 'no driving to work' clause that Hagerty has? He is driving a Ford Model A for a year and works for Hagerty, I would assume that at least one day of the year he is going to go to work. I think I will send him an email and ask who insures his car as his own company won't provide coverage for it.
