Who's fault is this?

"IBM Says Watson Jeopardy Win is Just the Begining"

This was a headline on Google news this morning. Watson computer can beat humans but they can't spell the headline correctly.

And we are supposed to believe that global warming is for real and sun spots are going to destroy the earth. No wonder some kids are growing up half-wits.

Are you saying kids write Google headlines?

No, I'm just pointing out when kids read and see these kind of blatant errors, it's no wonder they don't care about spelling and doing well in school. I see these kind of errors much more frequently on the internet.

Kids learn from what they see, hear and read. In this case they learn incorrectly. With spell check these type of errors shouldn't occur.

But then again, most kids aren't looking at Google news these days. Maybe I just got up on the wrong side of the bed.

See when I saw an article on a computer beating a human in a quiz game and then a miss-spelling in the headline, I thought it was funny, ironic.

My wife works in the HR dept. of a local university. For any of the student workers to get a job on campus they have to fill out a job application on-line. She is always just amazed how bad the kids spell, and punctuate a JOB application. They fill it out like it was a text message to their best friend. Of course many of the adults filling out the same application don't do much better.

Agreed, but it makes them easier to sort through. I routinely round file any resume with spelling or grammar errors, poor formatting or punctuation use. This is an industry that is about presentation of ideas, as well as technical ability. If you're technically brilliant but can't present your ideas to a client or colleague, what good are you really? Of course the same applies to the applicants with great, beautiful and well-composed resumes or portfolios who are technically daft (6" deep beams spanning 50', no consideration of safety/code issues, inadequate circulation or support space (mechanical, electrical, storage, etc). Just being able to make crazy-cool computer models isnt terribly impressive anymore either - I want well-rounded, capable individuals who can step into any one of several roles easily... That's valuable.

While I try to be correct in my spelling and punctuation on PP, if I was doing a resume for myself or someone else, I'd be damn certain the I used all the resources available to get things correct, and since I'm anal, I would most likely double check as well.

I don't think that kind of effort goes into most documents created today.

I am admittedly the worst speller ever and I have barely a clue on punctuation. To top it off I use two fingers to type. I'm not proud of it but that's the way it is. I blame it on the public school system. Thank god for spell check. Of course that doesn't help much if you don't know what word is to be where.

I am just now figuring out when to use there and their as well as to vs. too thanks to my 10 year old learning it in school now. When ever I need to send a letter I either type it and give it to one of my secretaries to correct or I dictate it and have them type it.

I am 46 so it's not just the younger generation.
