P C question

I use a pc for my business' lots of quickbooks.
My pc has xp and is really old. I need to upgrade, any suggestions?
I am most concerned about my quickbooks and word and excel being transferred over.
I want the transfer done by someone other than me.

Thanks in advance

I'll make you a deal, have the new PC shipped to me, ship me the old PC and I'll move everything over and set it up for you, all you pay is shipping and I'll keep the old PC (donate it to someone).

I appreciate the offer, but I would rather find someone more local

I recently built a fairly fast Win 7 machine with red-beard's advice. It is easy if everything goes right and you get no broken components. The transfer is time consuming and I'm not a big fan of the way Win 7 deals with files...

You could search up that thread if you wanted.

It sounds to me like you need to call around locally to find out who would be best to transfer and set up your machine. It WILL cost you.

You may need to upgrade some software packages and then re-learn their interfaces as well.

Finally, ALL you confidential information will be exposed to the person doing the work for you (as well as their pimply-faced helpers...) PLUS an unscrupulous person could easily install "back-door" means to pull information off of your machine in the future.

So...

Do you know where all your business (quickbook extensions, xlsx/xls, docx/doc) are located? If not then do a search for them. Copy them to a portable USB drive ($65 for a 1TB drive at Frys) and then copy them to the new PC. Don't trash your current PC until you are certain you have everything. I don't have experience with Quickbooks - does it maintain a library (database) of customers? Does it have an export tool? Moving to a new PC you ONLY want to copy your data files - leave system and application files alone.

I'm closer. Still would be a day trip though. Word and Excel is not much of a problem. QB can, depending on the version. The older versions don't like Vista or 7.

What Version of Quickbooks? We're running 2009 in Win 7 Pro (both x32 and x64 versions) with no problems.

Microsoft has a utility for transferring files.
Get a external drive, run the utility on XP to back files then run the WIN 7 utility to restore.
Or just run XP mode for the software that won't work on 7.

When I upgraded one of my workstations I just made an image of the drive and restored it to the virtual machine drive (XP Mode). When I run it in full screen I can't tell the difference, and it saved having to install all the software.

the MS file Xfer Utility used to transfer all sorts of stuff - some of which you do not want

it may be selectable nowadays - but I did it all manually which gave me a clean new computer & generated a backup at the same time

IMO, those transfer utils suck. Tried it once at the request of a client, horrible results. Especially if it's from XP to Vista or 7.

Got your pm. Mombroke her wrist last night and is in the hospital, where I currently am as well, visiting. I'll give you some recommendations later this evening, if that's okay. Orange is out of my area, but I'd be happy to come down and help you out.
