Not a NASCAR fan but

WTF did they do to make the cars pair up like that. That looks just plain stupid.

kaisen 02-20-2011 11:09 AM

Do you mean drafting??

Buckterrier 02-20-2011 11:18 AM

It has got to be the worst form of racing EVERRRRRRRRRRR. Between the 'koetions' & the commercials I'm friggin' done. Will NEVER watch a CRASHCAR race on FOX again. In fact the Penguins are on now, screw you CRASHCAR.

dd74 02-20-2011 11:39 AM

Fox just gave a great definition of why they're racing this way. The new surface at Daytona enables (or requires if a driver wants to win Daytona) two cars to join together and have twice the horsepower as one car. In short, two cars linked like that go over 200 mph, while one car is barely cracking 195.

I think it's cool how these NASCAR drivers are able to adapt to such varying track conditions throughout the year. They have serious talent.

jpachard 02-20-2011 11:54 AM

I'm not a NASCAR fan but the different style of racing is interesting. What I don't understand are all the full course cautions? I understand it somewhat for a safety reason but some of the ones they are throwing seem contrived, maybe to get the most number of cars over the finish line??

While it's not my "style" of racing, I challenge any of the critics on the board to do the same thing in one of those cars. I can turn a 2:12 at Watkins Glen in my car and that's on my own. I can't imagine trying to haul the mail relying on someone else. That takes a lot of balls.

James

It's a show not a race.

It is drafting in the sense there is no air on the second car but they are linked up and the second one pushing. I think they said three would not be stable for the middle guy.

Now a team sport and you need 2 cars?

Not stable? NONE of them can even friggin' see one another other than the car in front, just plain dumb.

dd74 02-20-2011 12:12 PM

The drivers have spotters to help them see around them. Are you watching and listening to the race?

Buckterrier 02-20-2011 12:19 PM

Yeah I have a seeing eye dog also. Would rather see going 200+ mph

dd74 02-20-2011 12:30 PM

You should go to see at least one NASCAR race live. Yes, it is a show. More like an event.

Buckterrier 02-20-2011 12:35 PM

I've been too many, Michigan, NH, Dover. I used to be a HUGE CRACHCAR fan in the mid 80's early 90's... until it became a show, er event. Was a big Bill Elliott fan.

dd74 02-20-2011 12:47 PM

Every sport outgrows itself to a degree. I remember back in the day when pro football players needed to have real jobs when the season ended.

I know this: I'd rather watch Daytona than the All-Star Game.

What's great about this particular Daytona is how the drivers communicate with each other to make deals as to who will push who.

I suspect the end of this race to be very exciting.

Yeah and professional wrestlers are talented in thier shows too...talent on the part of the participants doesnt make the show any less ridiculous.

Im sorry, but you cannot have a racing series where the cars are required to have constant contact to be competitive. Between chipmunks dancing on the screen, lucky dogs and all of the other contrived crap, I thought that the "sport" couldnt have gotten any more silly...and yet I have been proven wrong once again.

No different than any other pro sport. Fact is, I separate the sport from the marketing of the sport.

The contact is not continual through the series. In this particular race it is a necessity, but not through the entire series.

Super_Dave_D 02-20-2011 01:18 PM

They have ruined Daytona. I agree, nothing but WWF!!

dd74 02-20-2011 01:20 PM

Green-white-checker. Yep, I knew it'd be an exciting finish. SmileWavy

Nope

TimT 02-20-2011 01:25 PM

That is some of the stupidest "racing" I have ever seen..

Yea those guys are uber talented drivers, but really...pusher cars?

Formalities. There's always a crash with one lap to go. It's the WWF for cars, remember? ;)

Buckterrier 02-20-2011 01:27 PM

This is just F'ing stupid. A mixture of WWE & Demolition Derby.

dd74 02-20-2011 01:31 PM

Thanks for watching it with me, Pelican boys! SmileWavy

Used to not like the Woods Bros. When Tiny Lund won at 63 Daytona, I was puling for Jr Johnson. But it was good Lund won, he pulled Woods' #21 driver M Panch out from a wreck in Rolex practice. They gave him the ride & he won because he drafted, saved gas, & made 1 less pit stop.

They had Pearson in later years. He was an excellent driver & I hated it when he outrun the Chevys.

The Woods Bros are very thorough & had a reputation as one of Nascars best pit crews years ago. Ford got them to pit Jim Clark when he first won Indianapolis in that mid engine Lotus Ford.

I'm glad to see the Woods Bros, one of the old bunch win again. nascar racing used to be good.

Why? I finished what I started? It's still silly racing. Wood Brothers had not won since 76'. Rooting for the team not the concept.

Bill Elliot should take a bow. He helped save them the last few years with his 'past championship' crown.

A930Rocket 02-20-2011 03:44 PM

I like NASCAR, but don't watch every race or the entire race each time. It was interesting to watch the two car draft, who partnered with who and how it worked. When I lived in Charlotte, we used to go to the races at the Speedway. Always lots of fun.

IIRC, the Woods Bros driver was driving his 2nd Cup race (and he's the youngest winner now) and it was the Woods Bros first win in 10 years.

It's pretty messed up. The racing is still there but apparently that's not enough for modern viewership that grew up with a game controller in their hands. Blame the promoters and the TV producers.

I know this, a push rod motor that turns 9600 RPM for 3 hours is an awesome piece. Standing next to one of these (restrictor plate or not) in the garage makes the ground move. You don't make the show unless you are very good at building, tuning, setting up and driving which takes up to 100 people per team nowadays and a hundred million.

That ain't no wrestling show.

Congrats to Trevor Bayne and the Wood Bros.

mattdavis11 02-20-2011 04:21 PM

Congrats to Trevor on taking the boys behind the Wood's shed. I'll probably watch Bristol and Talladega this season, maybe the 2nd race at Daytona. I don't like what they are doing in Nascar, the restrictor plate change was the straw that broke the camel's back.

They're building a track 10 miles away from where I live, and it's believed that F1 cars are going to run there next year. I'm optimistic that F1 might be able to shed it's skin to no longer be the most boring style of racing, ever.

I think this was the first NASCAR watch I tried to watch from start to finish. It was very riveting. I'm glad I wasn't a driver in that mess though!!

The place I was watching, fourcautions before it was over, said they'd give free track time to whoever picked the winner, and went around getting our picks.

I wasn't sure he could do it - but T-Bayne impressed me by backing out everytime it got dicey - saving his car and keeping a wreck from being possible. Smart kid - if he chose to not give it up at the end - he'd have fast unwrecked wheels under him. I was the only guy to pick him. (The rest of the people where split between Stewart, Martin, Kurt B., and D.E. Jr)

Wilhelm 02-20-2011 05:16 PM

This Daytona race reminded me of those figure 8 Demolition Derbys that have 2 cars chained together. Actually I think those Demo Derbys were more fun to watch on TV. NASCAR is ridiculous. And those caution flags... I have seen cars spin without hitting anything (=no debris on the track) and wind up 100 yards off the track on the grass and they throw a yellow flag that lasts for 5 laps. I guess if you are drunk by 10 AM on Sunday mornings , NASCAR is interesting.

F1 isnt much better actually.

ALMS is the best racing series around these days !

So, what did you win? Where is the free track time? How long? One lap? ;)

widgeon13 02-21-2011 02:45 AM

Nascar is not my favorite but it is car racing so I watch out of the corner of my eye. It's certainly not as stupid as WWF. While F1 is more expensive it still seems to be theatre. I'm just as happy watching Pcar Club race.

CurtEgerer 02-21-2011 03:53 AM

The champions produced by boring/parade style racing:

2010 - Vettel / Red Bull
2009 - Button / Brawn
2008 - Hamilton / McLaren
2007 - Kimi / Ferrari
2006 - Alonso / Renault

The champions produced by 200-lead-changes-per-race style racing:

2010 - J. Johnson / Chevy
2009 - J. Johnson / Chevy
2008 - J. Johnson / Chevy
2007 - J. Johnson / Chevy
2006 - J. Johnson / Chevy

Maybe all those lead changes are just for show after all?:D

widgeon13 02-21-2011 03:59 AM

Of course you started after Shui was dominant. What's the big deal, if you don't like it watch something else, like there is anything worht watching on TV Sunday afternoon in Feb.

Law and Order on USA, that's really exciting.

bivenator 02-21-2011 05:46 AM

Its racing, heck, I have found myself watching the riding lawnmower racing and barstool racing as well. It has an engine and people are competing, I watch. You no likey, you no watchy.
