WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!! Fingers out - bad, bad move...pain, pain, pain...

Even the 11yo knows how to cut now (thanks to the 18yo chef in the family; no thanks to me )...

I feel for you - ouch!

Vash, you should cut meat instead Much safer. Have the pigs chop the parsley between their chompers and you just eat the refined version of it!

The good news is that a sharp knife cuts a nice clean edge that usually heals up quickly. Some antibiotic ointment on it and wrap it tight - good as new in the am.

Why is it that I feel being a fly on Vash's wall would be very entertaining? I mean that sounds like it hurt.

I was expecting a gory photo. Thanks for not posting one.

OK, So you had an accident. Live and learn. Believe me it could have been worse.

I once cut the tip of my finger almost off with a Leatherman tool. Damn blade folded back as I was trying to trim a piece of wood.
I drew it back whilst it was still touching the wood. Yes I know stupid move.
I threw it in a draw and haven't used it since. I'll only use rigid blades or retracting razor blades now.

In the millwrights they have a saying: "you can always tell the Joes by their fingers and their toes".

Don't know exactly what they meant by Joe but I'm pretty sure it is derogatory.

Tip when using a cleaver keep your other hand by your side; you don't get a second chance.

I'll have to check the forum rules, but I think if a topic has the words " 10" chef knife + distraction + finger" in it the first post MUST include, at a minimum, photos of a freshly severed digit and significant gore.
This was soo misleading. I want my money back.

Giggle-worthy George ...

Peter's 'stupidity' with his Leatherman reminds me of some stupidity of my own. The scar is enough reminder actually...

Really busy Saturday...race home from work to prep for a dinner party; had to race off again to pick up a customer car in the afternoon so was very rushed. Couldn't find the appple corer, so grabbed the grapefruit knife instead . Hit a soft spot in an apple and the knife went straight through the apple and almost severed my middle finger on my left hand. Fine serrated double edged little sucker nearly took my finger off (cut through from the fleshy side to the nail bed). I saw stars...had to sit down in a hurry!

My Border Collie was so distressed that she was under my feet as I tried to get to the bathroom for the medic kit; so I tripped over her too. Thank God Mum arrived soon after...the dog raced to the front door and dragged Mum by her coat to the bathroom to find me sitting on the toilet (seat down ) trying to dress the finger and doing a lousy job (I am left-handed). Mum takes one look and then berates me for the next 10 minutes about my choice of knife (gotta love your Mum )...eventually she shuts up and cleans and wraps the finger for me.

I start over on the apples; get everything sorted and then remember I have to pick up a hot 356 Speedster and take it to work. This car did not have the soft-top on and it was a cold day. I can remember the pain of the cold air hitting the finger every time I had to change gear in that car. It was the only time ever that I hated driving it.

A couple of days later I finally went to the doc...then he berated my for several minutes. Yes I should have had stitches as a minimum, but it was too late for that. He put it all back together with little butterfly bandaid things. I had pain in that finger for years and sometimes still do if I hit the scar as I did a fair amount of little nerve damage. That was 20 years ago...

I have never touched a grapefruit knife again...evil little suckers; all of 'em.

Actually,

10" chef's knife + distraction = -1 finger

My Wustoff knives have taken their pound of flesh, so to speak. I don't let anyone borrow them anymore.

Neosporin. Wrap in bandage. Stop the bleeding. Go about your business. It will hurt, throb, etc. Every day, check for infection and reapply neosporin, change bandage. In a few days it won't hurt much and you can more or less ignore it. After a few weeks your nail will be magically back. I did the same thing a few months ago. Thought the corner of my fingertip and nail would reattach itself, but it fell off. Yikes. But after a month, you could hardly tell.
