Questions about Internet Domain Names

I've got an idea for a business that I think I can pull the odds and ends together over the next year or so to make viable. I've come up with a name for this future business, and it's quite catchy. I'd like to have it in as I suspect it has not been used by anyone else.

How do I lock in the name on the web? Not sure I'm making this very clear - please excuse my inarticulate desciption. You know Pelican Parts is www. pelicanparts.com

Okay, like THAT only with my business name not Wayne's.

How do I do that?

Type 'go daddy promo' in google.

Just bought a domain yesterday for $5.99 a year. No hosting included. Reg price is $11.99. Don't be surprised if it's already taken.

Why would you buy a domain name without hosting unless you were planning on selling the name. Hosting costs can get pretty steep.

Also you can check out any domain name by going to Register Domain Names at Register.com - Business Web Hosting Services and Domain Name Registration Provider

Type in the name and hit enter. If its taken it will tell you but you can then click on the name and find out who owns it now.

It will then require you to type in a code to make sure you are not a spammer but it then tells you the owners contact info. Email them and see...

Are you the one that stole my idea for 'whyismyrighthandsotired' dot com?

Actually, that's still available.

I have 2, and I'd like one more, but it is being cyber-squatted...

If you host with GoDaddy's free hosting, this is an essential piece of code to add to the HTML BODY.

Be sure to tie up the facebook page with that name as well... You can start developing the page, and just not publish until you are ready...

I own a domain name. It's through godaddy.com. I've got it hosted through a friend. I think I pay $9.95/year for the registered domain name. The only thing it does is pass through email and I've got one picture posted on it. Godaddy.com offer web building point and click services for $4-$5/month. I know I can do it for free. Any suggestions should I want to make a website that is easy. I don't have the time or real interest to learn html.

Bluehost is more for hosting.

You can register the name with whoever you want and host someplace completely different.

I am averse to letting the hosting company register the name as some of them register it under their account.

You still own it but they make it a real pain in the ass to move it should you want to change hosting.

Not saying Blue is one of them, have no 1st hand experience with Blue.

Yeah but it appears to be $6.95/month for name and hosting and the ability to update and make web pages. Sorry but I'm a neophyte on this.
