Here are a couple of pics of my wife's tortoise, Turbo. I don't know about pyramiding being an indication of anything but an excess of nutrition, although it isn't something to be promoted. Ours is a male. Females aren't commonly sold as I understand it because breeders don't want the public breeding them. The males occasionally get big ugly hard ons and walk around with a pained look while they have them. If we put a rotary sprinkler out, he'll hump on it until he breaks it. He falls in love with one instantly.

Nice work on the enclosure Henry!

Here's a couple of ours (we recently learned we have a breading pair - I guess that wasn't fighting after all!)

Where the first baby emerged:

Only two survived

A few days old:

About 3 months old:

Dad and Mom (Approx 8 and 9 years old)

They do love the hibiscus

I understand a lot of people get Sulcatas not understanding how big they get, how long they live (60 - 80 years), and that they actually require some maintenance. They try to give it away to a zoo, animal rescue society, or whatever and find out they can't be taken in because the zoo or society already has an excess of them. That lower pic of ours shows how he likes to lounge in the door of his house. For this coming summer, I will have to install an air conditioning system. It will be a 3 inch, insulated duct with an inline fan and automatic temperature switch that draws cool air from under the house. He made it through last summer OK, but it was pretty hot for him even though there is insulation in the 4 inch thick walls and about 5 inches of insulation in the roof.

If your teenager don't want them, I'll give them a good home.

Yeah, well these are grassland dwellers in the wild, and they dig burrows there. I don't want to encourage ours to dig, especially when they are supposed to be able to dig really big burroughs. He seems to think his house is his burrough, and that's fine with me.

Where are you going to install the flat screen and wet bar?

Nice looking pets everyone!

OK, pretty sure I've settled on the guy on the top of the pile in this pic. I'm thinking about it until Sunday since it wouldn't ship until Monday anyway.

Scott, I've had similar comments from neighbors and friends. I'm just the kind of person who takes the responsibility for caring for something seriously. I'd feel really bad if it died from lack of care. But it does have it really good.
So HHI, what kind of tortoise is that??? Some tortoises hibernate, and I've heard of people putting them in things like shoe boxes & sticking them in the closet during that time. Are those hibernators? What are the specs on them?

It's a young, clown-faced, red foot tort. It's about 4 inches right now and will max out 12-14. No hibernation needed and fairly resilient overall.

Hi,

a little late to the party, but it sounds like you made a good choice. Red Foots are great tortoises, not too big or small and still good personalities, though not as active (nor destructive) as a sulcata. Captive Bred to boot, good on you, feel free to pm any questions.
Sherman and I say Hi!
