"Take your Daughter to the Range" day

I took our 15 year old daughter Becky to the range today for the 1st time. She fired the Walther PP (.32 cal) and the Remington Rand M1911A1 (.45ACP) and she did very well. Unfortunately, the Ortgies aftermarket mag failed and the Walther's firing pin broke, so I've got some work to do and some parts to find. Becky is very proud of her shooting and I'm very proud of her!

Becky and the (now broken) Walther PP

Me and the 1943 Remington Rand M1911A1 (ol' faithful)

Look for the PelicanParts sticker...

I emphasized safety and Becky had a good time and we enjoyed our time at the local range, then off for Lebanese food for lunch, then dad gets to clean the guns and fix the Walther...

This is what happened to the Walther PP at the range today...

According to the Walther parts guide, it's the "Signalstift" and the "Druckfeder" that are broken, not the firing pin. So, the extractor broke... I'll need to disassemble the slide components, figure out what broke and find replacement parts... Should be fun...

Sounds like a good time!

If I were you, I'd try to make a regular thing of this a few times a year. Don't ever skip the lunch either, that's the most important part.

I'd also always clean the guns myself. You don't want this to turn into a chore for her. If she asks about the cleaning, by all means let her help, just don't make her clean them. She may only be moderately interested in the shooting but highly interested in having fun with her dad...

Good Job!

The smile on her face is well worth it!

That and not taking her to Mc'Donalds for lunch! Yes!

More pic's of the 1911!

Brings back wonderful memories

'Dad and daughter' days are really special (and yes always do lunch!).

I would have been about 9 or 10 for my first 'shoot' at Dad's pistol club (under the caring and watchful guidance of the club president no less). Once the pres was satisfied that I understood safety was paramount then I was allowed to shoot with Dad. Miss those days, miss my Dad...

Art, part of the whole shooting experience is learning about how the gun works and knowing how to pull one apart, clean it and get it back together gives a good understanding. It was part of the whole deal for us...Mum would cover the kitchen table for us and we'd get cleaning. It was a great way to cap off the day.

Thanks folks, I'll definitely teach Becky how to clean the guns, just like I taught our son. We'll shoot regularly, but I'll start Becky off on the smaller caliber pistols and pistols with smaller grips. I try to have lunch with the kids together and separately on a regular basis, but since our son is 19 and our daughter is 15, they always seem to have something else to do. Becky has taken up rowing and is on her high school's rowing team, so soon all of her "free time" will be spoken for. We had a good time today, definitely a day to remember!

Jeff,
Thanks! I found a step-by-step guide to taking down and reassemblying the Walther PP and I'm working on that right now...

How to disassemble a PP / PPK in 70 steps - Page 2 - WaltherForums

Why was it thought necessary to move this thread to PARF rather than just to the off-topic forum? Have we become so hypersensitive that taking ones daughter to a shooting range is now considered political?

Yeah, I accidentally posted it in the wrong forum, the moderator was kind enough to move it here for me.

I took the Walther apart, found the problem, fixed it and now I'm trying to reassemble the slide components. Everything is held in place by the safety and getting that bugger back in will require all of the patience I have and possibly more...

I've taught my 4 sons on a pistol from the age of 10, of course I used the smallest bore pistol that I own.

45 acp.

Our son Daniel was given a 9mm S&W Model 59 in nickel by my father several years ago for Christmas and he really likes to shoot that one and my M1911A1's. During the winter we shoot quite a bit and I reload ammo, but in the summer we're too busy enjoying the short-liver Michigan summers. I need to find a local outdoor range that's nearby so I can shoot my AR-15 more and at longer distances...

I got the Walther fixed, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be...

Our family tradition is to build a gingerbread house around Christmas and then shoot it with the airsoft gun when we're done with it. This is last year's photo. My wife took our daughter to the range a while back. She had a blast with the .22 pistol.
