Prostrate-Uh Oh!
Went for my annual physical yesterday. Like every year the MD does the digital thing. This time he says he feels a hard lump on the left side of it and so on Tuesday, I'm off to the Urologist for a probable biopsy. May be benign, the PSAT was unchanged from last five years. One thing I will say about this MD, its uncomfortable compared to my previous MD of a few years back. It should be uncomfortable, you want him to "check", not go through the motions, so to speak.
In looking around, I found that 80% of men who reach age 80 get prostate cancer. BTW, I had a colonoscopy a few weeks back and it was clean. The one I had 5 years ago, the MD found a few polyps of the type that can (and apparently do) turn cancerous. I'm good on that for another 5 years. I'm writing to my "brothers" to say "get er done". End of Public Service Announcement.

I'm 64, just had my physical a couple of weeks ago, everything OK. My doctor is also Dr to a good friend of mine, same age, very healthy. He was just diagnosed w/ prostate cancer and had appropriate surgical procedure and is on the mend. I have another very good friend, same age, (healthy as a horse) who was taken to the hospital last Friday. Monday I got a call that he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma (stage four) in lungs, liver and brain. I guess shlt happens at this age.
Do what you have to do to take care of the situation, the alternative sucks! Good luck and keep us posted. |

My Dad was completly curred due to early detection. 1 in 6 will get it but it detected early is 95 % sure it can be eliminated. Bonne chance !

Good luck!
I'm glad you had the balls to come on here and say this! You may not realize this, but tomorrow someone will read this and this will tip them to get the test done. The doctor will catch a prostate cancer at the beginning, and you might have just saved that person's life. I get that test every year; it is better to have a pair of someone's fingers in your rear than have 10 of your own...in a coffin. Keep up the good work! N! |

Whats the age one should start getting this done? I've been thinking I'm getting to the age that I should probably get it done, so thinks for the reminder.
Sending good thoughts your way Hugh.

Get it done.
2 ways, Radiation or Surgery. If you do the surgery, Consider the 'DaVinci' robotic prostatectomy... some don't even stay in the hospital overnight. Chances of keeping the peeing and Fuch..g nerves intact are much better. |

No way Hugh trades medical problems with Byron.
Any family history Hugh? If your PSA is unchanged it is likely nothing to get too worried about. That da Vinci robot is apparently the cat's ass for this sort of stuff, but you are putting the cart before the horse a little bit thinking about that.

Thanks for the email You give me a lot of comfort. Too early to tell, but I hope its fine I'll keep you posted. You are all "brothers" to me. I slept like crap last night thinking about it. I love my wife, Donna, and after 27 years of marriage 3-4 times per week is still on our agenda.

Good luck Hugh.
At least you didn't have to see my doctor about it. Avoid Dr Jane Falconer. I'm sure she intentionally did something awful to my arse because some guy did something (that she thought was) awful to her's. |

Good luck Hugh. Two long time friends of mine had prostate procedures done around the same time within the last two & a half years. One had the classic surgery and seems to be doing fine after quite a while of adjustment. The other had the proton treatment at Loma Linda. He seems to be doing much better as far as his post treatment life is concerned and says he's doing fine. Of course I don't know for sure. Keep us posted. Hope it's not anything serious.

I hope you don't need it but if it's cancer, Seattle is the place to go. Let me know if you need some names.
