Seattle Pelicans

Hi Pelicans...

My son, Taylor Overman has been hired for a summer internship with Boeing in Seattle. His internship is for 11 weeks starting May 17th ending July 29th. If you have a room or apartment you would be interested in renting or know of a nice safe place in Seattle you would recommend I would love to hear from you. Taylor needs a place in downtown Seattle with convenient access to transportation… Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

Taylor is 19 years old, he’s a freshmen at East Carolina University – Greenville, NC. He’s studying Biology / Chemistry. Taylor’s long term goal is to complete dentistry school.

More about Taylor in the link below:

My Son Finished Drivers Ed Today

Thanks, Wayne.

Where in the Seattle area is he working? The big plant is out at Everett, north and south in Renton and Auburn. Most are not in Seattle proper. Even Boeing field is south of Seattle.

James,

Taylor will be working at building 2-122, I think this is at Boeing field. We've talked with a couple of property managers and they recommended he live downtown for easy access to transportation… 15 min bus ride from downtown to building 2-122 is what they've told us. I’m trying to learn the area from NC so I need all the help I can get.

Yeah, gotta agree with John Walker. Not so sure I would want my 19 year old son wandering around Belltown or Pioneer Square if he did not grow up in the city. I can't say downtown Seattle is the way to go.

Let ask the right people and get back to you.....

Stay away from pretty much most of "South Seattle" or any area that is on the Seattle city limits North or South. Downtown is a major hassle, and the rents and traffic and parking will absolutely punish you. If you're 19 you'll just get into trouble down there.

If he's in Renton there are nice areas- PM me if you want a rundown on that part of town.

Kent- hit and miss, stay away from downtown Kent area and getting around can be a pain in azz.

Up North of Seattle towards Everett you can do some parts of Bothell, Mill Creek, and some parts of Lynnwood

I would never work at Boeing Field in Seattle and live in Renton, Kent, Everett, Bothell, Mill Creek or Lynnwood. The commute would be horrible.

I live downtown and really enjoy it. If you need help with neighborhoods in Seattle, shoot me a PM.

You are right Randy. Renton would not be a horrible commute. Tukwila would be okay as well.

I am being a little biased here.

Although, if I were 19, I would much rather be in Seattle.

if he's working out of the 2-122 building its acrosss from boeing field. i would look for a place around capitol hill. if he has wheels, renton, the east side, shoreline are all within driving distances and shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

Have him look in Renton, Tukwila or Burien. He doesn't want to be in Shoreline and come thru the city from the north to the south. Boeing field is south of downtown and so are these suburbs. Metro bus will get him there.

Stay away from the Rainier Beach, and White Center neighborhoods. True "hoods"

Cool place to be; I have spent a lot of time accross the street in the old B-52 hangar for flight test operations. There is a lot of not just Boeing, but aviation history at this site. He will have a great time, and learn a good deal. Good for him. Oh, and my mom works in the 2-122 building, but she is retiring in May.

The 2-122 building is the one just south of the little inlet off the Duwamish in the photo below, with 12th Avenue South right in front of it to the east. The old B-52 hangar is the large building northeast, accross East Marginal Way.

Anyway, as far as places to live, the guys above are right on. This isn't the greatest part of town for anyone to live in, particularly a young man far from home. There certainly are nicer neighborhoods well within a short bus ride, though, as mentioned above. I'll second everyone on the "stay-out" zones, though. Pretty damn rough neighborhoods.

Edit - I don't know why my "zoomed in" version of the map won't open. Just "view larger map" and zoom in on the plant. You'll see two little inlets off the Duwamish River - the southernmost one, near 12th Avenuse South, is the one adjoining the 2-122 building, which is right on the south side of it.

Although it would not make the most sense from a commuting perspective, I would recommend he try and find a place on Capital Hill. This is the part of town where there are lots of young hipsters (and professionals as well). He would get a good feel for the young side of Seattle, its a very walkable area, so its easy to get around.

Other options would include lower Queen Anne or Fremont. Again, these are not the best place from a commuting perspective, but they will make his off time more interesting, with lots of things to do that wouldn't require a car.

Please don't be shy about asking for help when he gets boots on the ground here. We have a strong P-car community here.

In my opinion, Capitol Hill or West Seattle (Alaska Junction area) are the only two places where someone under 21 might find something to do.

I think Hardrive is offering good advice. Neighborhoods around Boeing Field are rougher, and just generally not the best places to live. But Boeing Field is just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown to the north, and that is where I would want to be if I were a young lad. Capital hill, Queen Anne and Freemont would all be great places to live. For a young person, prolly Capital Hill would be the most exciting. And from there, the bus ride to Boeing Field would probably be fairly efficient. Bus schedules can be found, and planned, online.

Hey, wait a minute. I am the one who first said downtown. BTW: "downtown" includes Capital Hill and Queen Anne (where I live).

I figured you were in the Pioneer Square area, above one of those places where they have the shootouts.
