how much for a .243 remington 700 series spoon?
i am going to offer to buy my dad's old deer spoon. it is a 1960's remington 700 he has owned since new. it is not perfect, but in excellent shooting condition, no scope (it finally broke inside after all these years). he fed the family with this spoon while going to school.
how much should i offer? TIA

Those 700's are all over the map. Mine is perfect, .30-06 with a decent scope and I was offered $700 for it a few minutes after I got it for trading a SIG pistol I had $250 into plus $150 cash. But I knew that was MY rifle, so I kept it.

Remington 700 ADL .222 Bolt action Early 1960's : Bolt Action at GunBroker.com
Lots of bids up to 405 at the moment... if you have a gb account you can search completed auctions. Do that and sort by high number of bids first.

ADL or BDL? BDL's are a bit higher finished, so they go for a bit more. Assuming it's a BDL:
Since it's your dad, I would go up to $400, at the very most. If it were something a bit more "special", like a first gen 7mm mag with the blued stainless barrel, maybe a bit more. Early .222's and 6mm Remingtons are starting to be a bit "collectable" as well. .243's, though, are a dime a dozen at the gun shows. They go for $300-ish at the shows around here.

BDL's will have a black forend tip and a hinged magazine floorplate (as opposed to a blind magazine on the ADL).
$300 wouldn't be much of a kinfolk deal. Jim

Let your Dad set the price.
What do you have or have done in your life that you really don't owe to your parents? Making his day is more important than saving some money. IMHO. ![]()

well, knowing my father, he has absolutely no idea what the gun is worth and will probably either decline to sell it (for sentimental reasons, which is just fine) OR he will just tell me $50 (and i want to give him a fair price for the rifle).

Come to think of it, from a dad's perspective, I would never deign to sell a gun to one of my sons. Yet both have guns that were once mine. I would be a little bit hurt if a son asked to "buy" a gun from me. Nynor, the most important part is that your dad is happy with the "deal". He would, most likely, be happiest giving it to you. Especially with the promise that it goes to one of your kids next.

well, i am going to get a deer spoon. i am going to offer to buy my dad's. if he wants to give it to me, i am happy to take it and care for it. if he wants to sell it to me, i am happy to take it and care for it. if he wishes to keep it, that is fine, too.
i would be proud to have his rifle. i would be even more proud to give it to my son, 20 years from now.

I keep seeing these "Spoon" threads here. It seems that all "Spoon" threads I have looked at have something to do with guns. Can someone tell me how "Spoon" and guns are related?
Thanks ! |

Jeez! Now you've done it! The black copters will be around shortly....
Some thought it was better, so the threads would remain hidden from the big eye.. It just stuck.

i talked to my dad just a few minutes ago. he declined to sell it to me, as i suspected. his reasoning is that a lot of people 'borrow' the rifle. after talking to my wife, it is clear that i am not okay with that: i take care of things, especially firearms, others do not.
the upshot is that i have narrowed what i want to two calibers: .308 or .300 winchester magnum. i am leaning towards the magnum round.

Your choices all but bracket the one that makes the most sense: the good old .30-'06.
Much has been said about this round as the perfect "all around" caliber for any North American game, so I won't rehash any of it here. I'll just speak from personal experience, as a guy who, even by my own admission, owns "too many" rifles. If I were ever, for any reason, stuck with just one, I have it down to two choices. .375 H&H magnum or .30-'06. The .375 is heavy for some stuff; the .30-'06 is light for some stuff. They overlap a great deal in the middle, though, on game like mule deer, elk, and black bear. You can include big white tails in there too, I guess. I would base my final choice on whether I thought it more likely I would be hunting brown bear and moose, or pronghorn and sheep in addition to those in the "middle ground". To me, the .30-'06 neatly splits the difference between the .308 and .300 mag. It will, in real world terms, do what either one of those will do. It handles heavier bullets better than the .308. It gives up no noticeable ground, in the real world hunting fields, to the .300 mag. I would defy anyone, save for the additional blast and recoil, to tell me which one he just shot by how it performed on game, or by how "flat" it shot, when comparing the .30-'06 side-by-side with a .300 mag. There is a significant advantage as far as variety of ammunition commercially available for the .30-'06 as well. You will find a broader spectrum of bullet weights and styles than in either of the other two. Plus, it shares the cost advantage of readily available surplus ammo with the .308, something the .300 mag can't say. This is a huge advantage for the non-handloader. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I've played with most of what is out there. While the old .30-'06 is not as glamorous, new, or trendy as some of the newer kids on its block, it is still by far the best bet as an only rifle, or as a go-to backup with proven, reliable performance.

Seen them for $250-750. I picked mine up (one of the earliest 700's I've seen) for free.
edit: from my FIL, not a neighbor's unsecured house.

I agree with the 30-06 comment. I love both my 300 Wby (in Winchester model 70) and 375 HH . Like the 270's but have seen alot of lost game with 7mm mags,, just too fast for too small of bullet in my opinion. They tend to blow up or through, not sure why but just seems like 7 isn't a good killing cartridge IMHO.
