Question Vitamins, do you take them? Question for Sid

I take the Centrum over 50 and a mg of time release "C" what do you take?
Sid - do vitamins go bad with time, I have some that are 3 months past the due date, are they still good?

Take em.... I wouldn't worry about a few months. There have been studys showing effectiveness of rx drugs as much as 10yrs past the date...

Do I personally take vitamins? No... But then I don't task the pills I have prescriptions for either.

I know people that take vitamins feels very strongly about this- otherwise they would not spend the money.

I don't take them. I just eat (mostly) right, and get my vitamins that way. I don't see any up side to taking them, and lots of down. I am pretty anti-pill and medicine, and that applies also. So unless prescribed by a doctor to solve some problem, deficiency, I think they are a waste.

I am almost never sick, so it seems to be working. Guess if I took vitamins and was also never sick, I would attribute it to my vitamins.

Co Q 10 100 mg daily. When three of my doctors told me they take it, was good enough for me. If you are over 35 and ever smoked, or take a statin look into Co Q 10.

Back a couple decades ago I was working for a contractor and was bidding a job at a sewage treatment plant.
The white hat (maintenance boss there) took me for a quick toor. he showed me the skimmers and what was skimmed off the raw poopies that came into the place.
Of interest was the thousands and thousands of vitamins caught in the screens. He told me that lots of the fancier vitamins do not disolve in the digestive system and end up in the treatment plant.
Seemed like a huge waste of money to me so I haven't taken any vitamins since.

Granted not all vitamins pass straight through, some actually work. But how do you tell which ones?

You can go to a site like calorie count and enter your typical day's food, it totals up the nutrition and you can see if you are high/low in a given item. I started taking iron after doing that. I also sometimes take prescription vit D because I'm often found deficient during blood workup.

Red yeast rice, fish oil, vitamin C, and a multivitamin every morning.

My cholesterol is slightly high, not enough to be worrisome so I chose to try supplements lower to normal acceptable levels.

John, if you are low on D you might find some improvement if you go for a walk at lunch, get a little UV light exposure. Of course if it winter and has rained for 5 or 6 weeks that does not help much, does it.

I take melatonin at night that has some B6 in it, take a multivitamin maybe every other day, break it in half, centrum or some such thing. My diet is pretty good, lot of fruit, veggies, nuts, whole grain, especially in the summer. Wintertime I am eating citrus, which may be why I can count how many times I have been sick since I was in high school on one hand, all but one of those were food poisoning when I went out to eat.

I drink a lot of water, well not a lot, but at least 6 or 8 glasses every day.

that is exactly the problem . . . I suspect that darn near every dark or olive skinned person in PDX is D deficient in February. The collective IQ of the city must decline 10 points.

I grab one of my kids chewable vitamins when I see them. (Orange is tasty, grape not so much) Doc mentioned that my D levels were much better than she expected. Causal? I don't know.

I take a multiple vitamin w/ minerals for the "mature folks", a krill oil cap, fiber, and melatonin before bed. I don't think not taking vitamin suplements is something critical, but a little insurance.

I was told by an Orthopedic Surgeon a few years ago, after he did some work, that I should be taking V. Cs, Ds, and Es the rest of my life, if I don't take them for awhile I do notice the difference.

Most people, and by most I mean probably way over 90%, don't get the right mix in their diet. Supplements make up for this.
