Thin & Light Notebooks
guess that's what they're calling 'em these days
a bit more cumbersome than a tablet, but... you can do real work on them Apple kicked the genre off, but they are saying that the Samsung Series 9 Notebook is thinner & lighter than the Air (if not than air)... Samsung's Laptop Is Lighter, Thinner Than a MacBook Air [GALLERY] |

I used to have sn IBM X41 convertible which was a thin light notebook (by the standards then) with a touchscreen that could turn over and fold down, converting the notebook into a tablet. I loved that thing. It had the PC problems of limited battery life and slow startup, and Win XP Tablet had a lot of problems - but stick an Atom or ARM CPU, SSD, 3G, and a decent tablet OS in it, slim it down with today's technology, and it'd be a great machine - maybe as perfect as the state of the art permits. I like a real keyboard.

Jeez, looks like you can buy one for $600. I'm almost tempted. I wonder if a Pentium M with 1 GB RAM and SSD can run Win 7 decently?

Sony has it going on, for light weight .. Sony VAIO X-series --carbon fiber --1.5 lbs from --11.1" display --3G thru Verizon (circa 2009) There is also the P-series (pocketable) 1.5 Lbs, but it's a mini notebook.

I'm typing this on the MacBook Pro 13.3 that I bought last year; it is very thin and light. I carry it in my pack and never know it was there, compared to my Sony Vaio K35 which was 8.5 pounds, and had a two pound brick. The two were more than TWICE what I weighed at birth!
I went to buy a MacBook Air, but when I used the Air and the 13.3 Pro...I realized that the tiny weight advantage of the Air was irrelevant, and I like having a DVD drive. -This computer puts that stupid Sony Vaio [3.08 ghz processor...] away as if it was a chevette racing my 928. I'm serious- that is a good metaphor for a speed comparison of these two computers! The Apple product works SO MUCH BETTER it isn't even funny! I can't say much about OS ["Snow Leopard"], other than it occasionally pisses me off....but the computer works so much better that it more than makes up for it. N! |

MacBook Air = 2.3 lbs.

Have a new Macbook Air with the SSD and 13" screen. LOVE IT. Have had it in a backback all over the world and hardly even know its there. Great machine and fast as hell.

is your keyboard backlit on that thing? I can use it as an opening wedge into the Apple fan boy world. I'm wondering if the pressure form the Win Thin & Light notebooks is enough to pressure them into some new version tho... |

Keyboard is not backlit, if I recall correctly. They are getting ready or did just release a version with the new Sandy Bridge processor.

i5s are much faster than Core Duos FWIW.
The i5 at 2.5 is ~40% faster give or take than the C2D at 2.1. That and the weight are the only two big differences. The bigger SSD vs. cheaper price washes those out.
