iphone vs 4.3 hot spot ??
I got a notification that the new 4.3 version has a personal hot spot feature for wi-fi . I downloaded it.. but the app that they show isn't on my phone? What am I missing? Also Air Play and Air Print aren't there either.. Do I need to download something else too? Anybody know about the new app? I'm grandfathered in on the unlimited data, I'll bet this is a scam to make that go away ?

doesn't your phone auto connect to any hot spot that's not protected? I have several places I go that have them and once you allow the connections when ever I go back its automatic. Or are you talking about something different?
Does the app just show you where the hot spots are maybe?

Something different. This allows for the iphone to become the hot spot and uses the 3G network as its internet source

Too late for you. I jail broke my iPhone and tether to my iPad. In fact, using it right now with my unlimited data plan. I'm on the beach in San Juan, PR. Not As fast as the WiFi at home but acceptable speed.

It's another $20 per month even with unlimited. Also, I read At&T will be tracking individuals who use JB phone to tether and charging their accounts accordingly.

Hot spot isn't cheap on any carrier iirc. Verizon and Sprint both charge monthly for the privilege of using your bandwidth for other devices. Welcome to the borg...

AT&T aggressively moving against unauthorized tethering
by Richard Gaywood (RSS feed) on Mar 18th, 2011 AT&T is ruining a lot of people's days with a customer mailshot explaining that its "records show that you use [tethering] but are not subscribed to our tethering plan." iOS, of course, will disable the built-in tethering facility if you do not have an appropriate carrier plan. There are a few jailbreak apps, the most popular of which is MyWi (previous TUAW coverage), that bypass the plan check and enable tethering independently. When you run MyWi or similar apps, your iPhone creates a wireless hotspot that allows you to connect other devices without the explicit permission of your carrier. Until now, people have assumed that AT&T either doesn't care or cannot determine that the traffic comes from a connected device rather than the iPhone itself. Clearly, those assumptions are incorrect. OSXDaily.com has the full text of the letter. It goes on to state that users can either terminate their unauthorized tethering usage before March 27, or they will be automatically moved to AT&T's DataPro plan. DataPro includes tethering and doubles the data cap from 2 GB to 4 GB, but also costs an extra $20 per month compared to the normal smartphone data plan. Any customers on the grandfathered unlimited data plans from older iPhone plans would also lose that facility if they moved to DataPro. |

I read about the email from AT&T as well , keep tethering Hugh and see what happens. I am not convinced they can tell if you are tethered unless 2 ip's show up under a single connection.
Have not heard of a verified email from Att - yet. I also believe you have to give up the unlimited plan to add the $20 hotspot. Bill is $25 for 2g and $20 more for 2 g tether. |

I am following this thread to see if any actual reports exist.
http://forum.tipb.com/jailbreak-unlock-forum/209065-poll-i-got-tethering-warning-my-useage-x.html My initial reaction would be that emails are being sent out to very heavy users who most likely are tethering to get their numbers into the 10g a month range. Any ideas on how ATT could tell if my traffic on this board is ending up on my iPhone or via WiFi to my iPad?

Thanks Randy,
This tethering is great. I'm using it now in my hotel room with no Wi-Fi, and downloading an iTunes movie and watching a Netflex movie and on PPOT all at the same time!

Have fun while it lasts, Hugh. Without unlimited data you'll blow through 4 GB in a hurry watching video with DataPro plan. And its $10 for each additional GB over 4 IIRC.
