Being a 26 year old car, that was over engineered and residing in Pa, (salt state) no where near what he is asking. I do like the looks though and they are becoming very collectable.
Also the dented hood and no engine pics are a big red flag for me

They usually command $5000 - $10000.

$8000 to $12,000 is a more realistic price more if it was in perfect shape. I have seen this particular car and it's rust free but still a driver. I can't speak for the engine of it's condition but it sounds good. These cars in rough shape end up selling for $6000 every day.

I think we had a thread on these a while back. There's a Pelican (javadog?) that owns two ur-Quattro Coupes. For that money it had better be damn near perfect.

I love those cars, that's another that I want to own someday. At least for a few months.

Well, since you were kind enough to mention me, let me say two things. One, you can't tell much about this car from the ad. Usually, $10k is the upper limit on these, as the average ur quattro is a poster child for fix-me-up cars. The only way to buy one is to buy one from someone who has already spent a zillion dollars fixing things and only if they started with a low mileage garage queen in the first place. In that (rare) case, it is not uncommon to spend more than $20k for a car. There aren't many of those cars out there and sometimes they get sold from collector to collector and the average enthusiast never hears about the sale. I've seen some of these cars trade hands for close to $40k.

It just so happens that I have one such car for sale. A few months ago I mentioned that I was thinking of selling off some of my cars. That day has come and one of the cars headed out the door is an ur quattro. The details:

'83 Mars red/tan leather, chassis #437
57,000 miles
K24 turbo, Ned Ritchie cam, Euro bumpers and lights
Euro Audi Sport steering wheel
Otherwise stock, down to the original radio

I bought this car from Kent Anderson in 1999. It was originally from the Montana/Idaho area. Luckily enough, it appears to have escaped much (if not all) winter driving as it doesn't suffer from the usual scruffiness underneath. I'm the third owner, as far as I can tell, and the second owner (a woman) bought it in 1985, with around 20k miles, give or take. I've spent a lot of time and money addressing the usual issues with these cars and I feel that this is one of the better cars left. It needs the visor clips and one small memory button on the radio. I have records for it dating back to 1986 or 1987. I have attached a couple photos, 'cause I know you all like your photos.... More pictures of the car can be seen at:

quattro pictures by javadog - Photobucket

More details and larger pictures are available to anybody with a serious interest in the car. I'm looking for $20,000.

Cheers,
JR

+1. Far cheaper to spend $20K on a beautiful car that's completely sorted out like Jeff's above, than $8-12K on a driver.

These cars have been coming out of the woodwork lately, but good cars? That's a different story. 2 previously unknown cars sold out of Traverse City, MI just this week (one a parts car, the other hadn't run in a while sold as a package deal). Here's an interesting story on another fixer-upper that popped up near my house last summer:

Car & Driver Magazine Test Car

Only 668 of these cars imported to the USA. I'd be surprised if half survive today since most were sold in the upper Midwest, New England and Colorado specifically to drive in the snow. Amazing to me they don't sell for more, given the historical significance and rarity.

Curt's car is beautiful and Fishman I wish you the best with your new ride. I worked at a Porsche Audi dealer when these things were new and I wouldn't touch one with the proverbial ten foot pole

I'll get some pics later next week, I've been around Audi's for a long while so not much scares me with the early ones. Should I be scared?

The good news is the problems that do occur are fairly well documented and with the internet, easy to access. The engines and drivelines are bulletproof. There are sources for most NLA parts if you know where to look. The '81 I just sold was one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. The mechanicals were pretty much unmolested and the car had only 70,000 miles. Before I bought it, it had been parked in a warehouse (with no storage preparation at all!) for 8 years. Drained the gas, put in a new battery, changed the oil and it ran like a champ. Drove it for 3 years (including ice racing) and never had to make a repair.

If I remember correctly, these had what was essentially a 924/944 transaxle in the front with a PTO off the secondary cassette running to a centre differential and then into the rear differential, giving it all wheel drive.

The weight and inertia was misfortunately biased however, as that engine hung out over the front wheels.

I would like to pick one up some day though.

So Curt what is going on in the marketplace with them? What are projects bringing, drivers and whatt are really great ones bringing? The one I purchased is in 100% original paint, never molested but is a small project since it has not been driven in a few years.
