Can't be good for sea life. Think this is just like the disappearing oil in the Gulf, oh it will just be diluted, no harm done.
This is just the better of two evils. |

except that the oil leaked into the gulf can be consumed by bacteria and broken down, among other processes to make it safe. radiation contamination is forever.

Well, it gets sequestered in the seabed so as long as you do not stir it up it will go away and it keeps decreasing according to it's half-life. The more radioactive the isotope is, the quicker it is used up and is no longer a problem.

Thanks for the clarification, don't think you can deny that both contaminants are harmful to the environment over some period of time.

Let's see - radiation being dumped into the sea off Japan.
Will we see a return of Godzilla? ![]()

LOL!!! give me a break. i'll go bathe in the gulf of mexico any time. japan, not so much.
your comparison of the two disasters, the horizon oil spill vs. the japan nuclear reactors, is, in my opinion, idiotic. to whit: the scale, magnitude, and long term consequences are nowhere NEAR the same. take a look at the data for chernobyl, for example. further, what are the death tolls for the horizon spill vs. the japanese nuclear ALREADY. further, this thread was NOT about the merits of nuclear vs. oil. over and out.

radiation contamination is not forever, but extends for several half-lifes of the isotope; the ones at issue here are I, Cs, and of especial concern here maybe Plutonium
both atomic (nuclear physics) and chemistry are at work - the chemistry affects how each isotope will bind to other things in the environment; and be concentrated by living organisms (which in turn means biology needs to be added to the mix of science - not just physiology, and various levels of ecology, incl. popn. ecol (predators eat WHICH prey, now?); ecosystem ecology (how do various chemicals, those isotopes, travel thru ecosystems) - now add in some oceanography (currents & etc.; storms) and... unhealthy radiation levels were detected in bottom dwelling fish today - dunno if it is a food species or is eaten by a fish that is eaten by a fish.. that is a food species - that is just the human health issue; there may also be damage to the nearby (or even remote) ecosystem to be considered at a minimu, if you travel to Japan, you should avoid most sushi, seaweed (nori), algae, and breast milk If I had to make a quick bet, I'd bet the BP oil spill will wind up being worse than the Tokyo Elec. radiation releases... |

It is (I read) mostly radioactive iodine... it has a half-life of about a week.
