newfounlands. the male, on the left, was just shaved in that picture. the female has a different coat from most of the newfoundlands i've seen. it is VERY thick, however, it just lays down.

sadly, the male is no longer with us.

ODDJOB UNO 04-12-2011 04:17 PM

how many rounds do they hold? the newfoundlands? they appear to be FULL AUTO! LOL

nynor 04-12-2011 04:28 PM

generally, they are deterrence. like i said, people cross the street, sometimes, when they see us coming. also, their bark is tooth rattling. when i say no to door-to-door salespersons with the newfoundland at my side, i have NEVER ONCE had them continue their pitch.

generally, i don't think gigi would hurt anyone, intentionally. however, if someone were to threaten my wife, it would get ugly. i've seen her go into full fight mode twice. it was amazing.

nynor 04-12-2011 04:30 PM

that is a good looking beast.

They look very similar to my last pooch, a Landser Newf/English Mastiff cross.

No my experience was an intruder in the dead of the night. The wife did not like guns until that point. I had planned for this a long time ago. In the military you plan for the worst situation and you train and prepare for it. It is not fear, it is a deliberate and intelligent process that is not based on fear but an intelligent assessment of potential situations.

I do not like to talk about what happened. The second intruder was in my house at about 2:30 am. I did all of the defensive stuff; locked wife in closet, called cops on my brand new cell phone, took charge of the situation, told the dispatcher to STFU, cleared the area, retired to a safe zone and asked for the cops to make entry. It was that simple. Had I chosen to enter the intercept area with a round chambered instead of chambering the round when I saw the guy the outcome would have been very different. NO ONE got shot, THANK GOD. But I Never had another problem in that house. The BIG down side was I never felt secure in that house. It has its consequences.

Second time, not to go into details, but after two young bucks tail gated the hell out of me AND I simply let them pass by pulling to the shoulder, and simply flashed my headlights, I DID NOT even bright them out, a simple flash. WELL about two miles down the road they decided that they were going to chase me, having waited on a side street. So here it is midnight, the local sheriff's sub station is closed and me without a cell phone, I needed to make a choice. Let them decide my fate or escalate it to the nth degree.

Seeing as how I did a lot of trap and skeet shooting in those days and this was a friday and Thursday was range night with friends, my Browning five was in its case leaning against the bench with my range bag, waiting for its regular Saturday morning cleaning. I made it to the house, which is hard to find in daylight, and had the garage door open. These youngsters were not far behind, but far enough, where I walked to the bench, grabbed the shotgun and a handful of number 8's, unzipped the case and started to shove rounds into the magazine. Just about the time that I had number three in the mag, up they roared. I stayed in the garage and shucked the soft case and they could clearly see that I meant business. My plan was simply to retreat into the house where, if they chose to push the point, it would have been an easy shot in a long hallway. I would have been in retreat and they would not have had a chance. They finally got smart and the squealing of their tires, IN REVERSE, woke up the neighbors. The cops caught them about a mile away. Both times, very stupid people doing very stupid things and facing someone that could and would give them every chance to disengage, someone who would allow them to determine their own fate. IF they made a bad decision, I absolutely have no doubt what I would do. And you know what is funny, what is really insanely funny, I WASN'T AFRAID, not one bit. Did I hate being put into that situation? You know what happens, things do slow down and since you have no choice you are very calm, if you are prepared.

+1. I would rather be shot to bits than torn to shreds.

nynor 04-12-2011 07:30 PM

i really only rely on the dog to make noise and deter. if someone has big enough balls to get past the dogs, they have to deal with me. not that i am a hard arse, far from it. BUT i am armed and i shoot well.

Tooth rattling? More like chit falls off the walls and you can feel the shockwave from 10 ft away.

You also don't need to tip the pizza delivery guy or even give them the full amount, they are just happy to get the hell out of there.

Have had a couple of Mastiffs. (The Greater Newf is a Mastiff and English Mastiffs also have webbed feet and like water) There is a reason they call them Gentle Giants. They are very patient and tolerant but do not F with or appear to threaten their pack, you will regret it.

You'd think something that massive would be slow and clumsy but my 225 lb Old English was frighteningly fast and agile. They are lot like NFL linebackers.

I have never slept more peacefully than when I've had a Mastiff in the house.

i think you HANDLED BOTH EXEMPLARY! my (2) incidents with bullets flying over me and others were also very very very VERY STOO-PID PEOPLE, that damn near ended in THEIR DEATHS NOT MINE!

full combat wombat its me or them mode is something thats hard to explain until you have been pressed into the situation. flight/fright or fight and make right. theres ONLY (2) choices .

my second incident with the drunk texas hunters south of pagosa springs ,colo. could have been very very ugly for the drunks. my 1st action(no time for thought) was hit the ground, my 2nd action was take safety off, 3rd was aim weapon at shooters. when i came off scope i realized what was happening. with a hensoldt scope from 450 yds ya kind of see everything. a freeking gawd damn whiskey bottle! since it was 3 against 1 i started yelling. the shots kept coming. thats when i got pissed and it WAS THEM OR ME! in case ya havent heard .300 win mags go off over yer head its a tad LOUD! anyway since i was pissed and the "them or me" combat wombat mind set....................i decided to light off (6) rds of .308 federal 168gr into a hillside north of me. if the rounds from the texans( i could see the plate) kept coming it was gonna get ugly real damn fast boom boom boom boom boom boom boom! AT THEM! i had had enough by now. like WAYYY ENOUGH OF THEIR POO!

so i lit off (6) from my hk-91, made a (1) round fingered chamber reload and dumped another 5 rd mag in mag well.

well you NEVAR SAW (3) DRUNK TEXANS put their rifles down so freeking fast, 2 run into open passenger door, 1 grabs bottle(i swear to god) slams tailgate and jumps in drivers seat and you could hear tire squeals in the colorado mud!

later that day when ranger danger came down and checked me . legal beagle orange vest and hat. correct unit(unlike others we met that hunt from texas) correct tag, correct hunting license, correct gun and ammo count on mags, we gots to chatting about my experience. and he GOT REAL INTERESTED REAL FAST!

i didnt have a plate # but i had a fairly good description. and off he went and got their dum azz'z. i didnt see ranger danger( i was in a dead end canon(canyon) maybe 2 miles from the ute rez by myself down in a "hollar"(hollow).

about 3-4 days later after some real heavy azz wet snow drove me out of the canon up to a flat where (2) old lou-si-ana father son cops were camping, they told me to join them as their is strength in winches in the event the white stuff kept coming down on top of us. since the ranger had already checked them earlier and myself when he did his run down this canyon he waved and we motioned him over and he gave us the lowdown on the (3) texans he arrested. and we about peed our pants/poo'd ourselves and laughed ourselves silly......................for freeking days we were cracking jokes about it.

out of state-drunk driving-driver

out of state-drunk hunting-2 others

and folks from colorado HATE DRUNK TEXANS! ask me how i know i used to live there!

wayyy bad and ugly for them and they deserved every bit of it.

yep things happen damn slow, but there is poetry in motion when ya know what the hell to do and yer training kicks in or experience kicks in.

i'm real touchy about people shooting at me. call it a character flaw. i'm a really nice guy until pissed off and threatened. i really like to laugh alot. i go out of my way to laugh. but this wasnt something to laugh about and neither was the clear creek az. incident.

nynor 04-12-2011 08:14 PM

LOL!!! yep, you know. that bark can be felt in the chest, just like a subwoofer.

the male was 190+ lbs. the female is on the small side at about 140 lbs. she has been super tolerant of our 2 year old son.

anyway.... back to the subject at hand....

i did the conceal carry course, years ago. i just didn't feel like i needed to carry a gun with me all the time. now, it is legal to have a loaded gun in the car, permit or not, in utah. i keep the gun in the house. it is loaded. no bullet in the chamber. when my son can rack the slide, i'll have to figure something else out.

Rick Lee 04-12-2011 09:18 PM

I took my UT CCW course, but can't remember the law on car carry sans permit, and don't really care, as I have a UT permit. I think you can't have it chambered if you have no permit. Something to the effect that you have to be two steps away from being able to fire. And I think it's a must-notify LE state too.

That was always my feeling about dogs. Great for waking me up so i can take care of business.

you can't carry sans a permit in utah. BUT you can have a loaded gun in the car. the law is that your car (this is in utah) is an extension of your home. yeah, its an odd one, new as of last year, i believe.

Same in TX. Also extends to your place of business.

Basically anything under your direct control.

Castle law, same basic deal in TX.

Rick Lee 04-13-2011 04:38 PM

Same in VA and AZ. Though in AZ we now have it like AK and VT - no more CCW permits needed unless you want to carry in a place that serves alcohol. I really wish my wife would get her permit, so I can throw my gun in her purse and have a beer with dinner and be legal. A CCW in AZ also exempts you from the NICS check when buying a gun in a store. It takes less than five min.

HHI944 04-13-2011 04:50 PM

Same in SC, no permit needed in home/business/vehicle, with the exception of boats. Unless you have a CWP, the only thing you can have on a boat is a shotgun, with CWP, you're golden for pistols and rifles.

m21sniper 04-13-2011 07:06 PM

In Pa you need a CCW to have a loaded anything in your vehicle, though once out of it, and outside pittsburgh or philly, you can open carry with no permit.
