Uninsured motorist is absurd

I bought insurance for my motorcycle and didn't complain when the clerk asked for $79.02 for every 6 months. Later, I viewed the binder to make sure I had the right coverage. I was shocked at the premiums for uninsured motorist. I'm paying roughly $13 for liability 100/300/100 and $65 for uninsured motorist. Optimistically, I am a low liability risk for the insurance company. Pessimistically, I think the risk from uninsured boneheads is great.

My other vehicles carry comprehensive, which shades the premium of uninsured.

Seems there isn't enough punishment for being an uninsured motorist. What ye think?

Whatever happened to "no fault" insurance? That seems like it would make more sense, and eliminate the bumper car lottery system we have in place today.

It's roughly 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a policy in SoCal due to all the illegals.

Hope and Change baby!

ANY vehicle that is stopped for any reason and does not have valid insurance should be impounded on the spot, 100% of the time by law, no exceptions. The vehicle should not be returned until proof of insurance is issued. If the insurance is canceled the state should be notified by the insurance company and a warrant issued for the arrest of the owner and impoundment of the vehicle. The fines for no insurance should be high enough to pay for all of that.

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that something like 1/3 of all drivers in the US are uninsured.

That $65 makes a lot more sense if that figure is true.

I agree. I think they are doing that in Texas, but there are some serious issues with the database not being up to date. So people are having their cars impounded when they shouldn't be.

But you kind of need to pick your poison... not to PARF this up, but since illegals are here any way, if they could get a drivers license and then insurance, they might be somewhat compelled to comply with that law... we could only hope.

I am told that in "Europe" the cops' license plate database is kept current as to insurance coverage and they routinely run the numbers. Insurance cancellation = impoundment, even if they find the car parked.

That would suck to go to jail for my uninsured bikes in storage.

Just don't drive them on the road until they are insured. You will be golden.

The law in Oklahoma states that you are required to carry your own proof of insurance card in the car at all times. It is the responsibility of the driver to have a drivers license and that proof of insurance at all times if the car is driven. It is a very simple requirement.

I got pulled over a few weeks ago and handed the cop an expired insurance ID card. That was a $1000 fix-it ticket. I faxed in the current one the next day and it was dismissed. Still, for some people, $1000 is a lot cheaper than buying car insurance.

I know of three Porsche owners that have been involved in accidents and in every case the other driver did not have insurance coverage.

1st incident with a family member: Other driver had no license, no registration, no insurance, and no money.

2nd: Other driver had no coverage and did not survive.

And recently the other driver did have a card to present to the Trooper but later found out it was canceled for non-payment.

I have my uninsured insurance for physical injury at the max coverage just in case I am severely injured or disabled in an accident with another un-insured driver.

That same exact thing happened to me a few years ago.

If the other driver had no insurance card, their car would have been impounded on the spot.

We have that in Dallas.

It makes an impression.

2 years ago I had to run to a meeting in Dallas, (my office is just N of Dallas City border) and remembered that I had recently received new cards but did not recall putting them in the car. I checked what I did have and they were expired by a few days.

Crap!!!!! If I get pulled over they'll tow the car. Does not matter that I had a policy in place, I could not prove it on the spot.

Rather than run the risk I called my broker and had him email me the cards then printed them out real quick.

I didn't think of it until after my stop was over, but I could have pulled up my ID cards on USAA's secure site on my iPhone and showed it to the cop. He did tell me to look for my new ID card while he ran my license. But then I've read on Officer.com that some cops won't accept an electronic version on a mobile device.

My uninsured premium is 1/3 of my liability premium. The odds of me being in an accident caused by an uninsured driver is 83.2%. The odds of me causing an accident are less than zero, so the coverage is well worth it.

People who drive without insurance either cannot afford it or are illegal and cannot obtain insurance. Either case, they get fined $700 bucks which they can't pay so it goes to collections and they continue to drive.

Enough that my car and bike insurance doubled when I moved from VA to AZ. The population density and deer population in AZ are a small fraction of what they were in VA. What else causes such a spike besides proximity to Mexico and uninsured wetbacks?
