Someone using AT&T with an Android phone

I need to know what the situation is with "tethering". I know that Steve locally here has an Android phone on T-Mobile and can tether his phone without any extra cost, except maybe a market place app.

Anyone doing this with Android and AT&T?

Thanks.

The phone doesnt need to be rooted to tether. Get an app called Pdanet(free), install on the phone and laptop.. away you go..

I dont have Verizon, but they also have a extra fee to tether. Pdanet is a workaround.

You can tether on T-Mobile, but after 5 gigs per month they throttle you down big time.

My understanding from AT&T is that due to the fact that I have an unlimited data plan, I cannot tether. If I were to switch from the unlimited, which is no longer available, I would be able to tether. If I were to unlock/root the phone ( or whatever the correct term is), tethering would be available.

Rooting and using barnacle is a great hotshot workaround.

what u can do depends on whether or not you want to deal with at&t's data policies on what device you can use the data that you paid for.

android 2.2 comes with own wifi tether app. alternatively, u can use pdanet to connect your phone to computer via usb cable and do that. no rooting required.

I am on AT&T with an Inspire. Here is the story. 1.) there is a separate data plan. I am pretty sure it is 4gb/month, $40.00. 2.) AT&T recently sent nasty-grams to users tethering via a hack telling them to stop or they will be automatically switched to the correct plan.

I used 40 GB last month. I'm glad I'm with Verizon.
