HELP! password crack for vista

first off, yea, i know vista sucks, i did not put it on there.

we have an 11 year foster kid. he is a very good kid considering his mother. no real problems other than some depression (of course) and trying to get him to understand being responsible for his actions. of course all this is DSS's fault and has nothing to do with his mother getting arrested for shop lifting or not making him go to school.
anyway, my brother let him use one of his old lap tops with vista on it to play games and chat on face book. well this morning my wife went to get on it and he had passworded the computer. well im pissed now! i told her to put it in our room so he cant get on it when he gets home.
what i want is to get into the computer just to show him that he' s not all that with his passwords and he is not as smart as he thinks he is.
so far i have found a few programs that should get me in, as long as they are truely free. man i hate those sites that suck you in by saying the software is free but the key is $XX! the program i have is OPHCRACK. the site said it was free but the file name had "trial" in the title, so i dont know.

so if anyone knows of a truely free software, let me know in case this does not work.

i am also considering putting software on that will tell me where he has been and what he has been doing, without him knowing. any ideas?

like i said, he is a good kid and what i have looked into so far he just plays games, downloads music, not that i call that crap music, and he gets on face book. but i would just like to look in every now and then and see whats going on.
preferabley without him knowing.

punishment for the password is no computer for the rest of the week, that will kill him......hehehehehe

I use ophcrack and it is free; sounds like you're not downloading it from the right place

Next he'll just use a Linux Live CD/Thumbdrive.

It's' what all the cooler/smarter kids are doing.

What you should really do is enable logging on your broadband router, then you can just hit the ip addresses and see exactly everywhere he went and at what time.

Screw the password game, have him unlock it and let him know that if you look at his computer again and there's a password, that you will

A. Throw it away and all his crap is gone forever, or
B. Wipe it and reinstall a nice fresh blank copy of Vista, and all his crap is gone forever.

Don't even waste your time trying to have a slap-fight with him. He's 11, and you are in charge of his computer. End of Story.

Do a search for Hiren's CD. It makes a bootable CD. It has lots of tools including password stuff. Sounds like you will need it as this kid gets older.

I have to agree with the direct approach. My stepkids are 35 and 41 now, but I can tell you what would have happened 30 years ago if this computer thing came up in my house.

Sledge hammer. Whenever they messed with me, I just beat whatever it was out of service. Stereo too loud for the 4 th time? I killed it.

I have no idea why they continue to thank me today for the way I raised them.

My step daughter turned 17 Monday...

She is very smart (4.0 and AP classes) very athletic (soccer, Lacrosse, track) and very cute, doesn't drink, smoke or date.

However wifey has ALL passwords... facebook, email, cellphone... I feel my wife spoils her but not when it comes to this kind of stuff.

No way, no how, no secret passwords.

I'll bet you a dollar you find something fishy on that there laptop

My pop didn't want us to bounce the basketball in the house. And, after the umpteenth time he asked us to not bounce the basketball in the house,

He stabbed it with a hunting knife. No more bouncing the ball in the house!!

It's hilarious 30 years later, and it worked.

thanks for all the replies.

oh i was direct. i told him i took the computer for putting a password on it. (he asked where it was when i got home). he could not tell me the password fast enough then. pass word was "youllneverguess", kinda funny. oh, i changed the password and left it on the table for him this morning.

i dont think he was trying to hide anything, although i did some snooping last night.
man it was killing him that he could not get on the computer last night. he gave me the "well i dont want the computer anyway" bit, then i said, ok, you can have it back. a few minutes later, "can i really have it back" me, "no", him, a little madder, "i dont want it anyway". probably should not have done that, but it was fun.

he is not suppose to have contact with his mother. i found 2 emails from her and several facebook entries. i am going to have a talk with him this afternoon about that. he has my wife blocked on facebook, so if he wants to get back on the internet, he will have to unblock her. i dont know if there is any other way he is talking to her. he has skype on the computer, but i did not see her listed under contacts, and i am not sure how skype works. ilooked at recent activity and it was just with some other kid.

she sent an email with just the number "32665", we think it may be a password to something, not sure what though.

he has a cell phone but no service.

You will have a challenge. Remember you are not doing battle with just the intellect of one 11 year old. You have to defeat the combined knowledge of his entire school and the internet.

Good luck.
