Hey, let's make it $10...the 8,000 miles I drive every year means fuel is no biggie for me. Make it $10 maybe traffic will lighten up.

$3.73 in Paducah today. I do my absolute best to NOT buy fuel in Illinois. Ky is usually 15 - 20 cents cheaper, and Mo is usually about 25 - 30 cents cheaper. Ky is about 45 miles away, Mo is about 60 miles away.

Bet you'd discover the main difference in price is tax...

Since we don't drive that much, and the wife drives a Prius, we are pretty insensitive to the price of gas. If gas cost $10/gal, it wouldn't make much difference to us - I'd ride my bike or scooter to work, or bus it (picks up across the road, easy as pie), our total fuel bills wouldn't be much higher.
But, yes, gas has jumped - the sales of full-size SUVs and pickups has slumped hard in the past few months, and GM has way too much inventory of those models (Dodge too). Still, if Tundras are in shortage due to the Japan earthquake, the domestics may still be able to move their gas-guzzlers. I do think it is funny that people buy more low-mpg vehicles when gas is low and fewer low-mpg vehicles whenever gas is high. Do they not realize that the trend for gas prices is up? When gas prices dip, like they did in 2009, do they think the lower prices are here to stay? Are they thinking at all?

OK, at $10/gal most of us would still drive our cars but thats not the point here is it? Higher fuel cost means we (all of us) pay more for everything...not good.

My motorcycle is almost $15 to fill - the insanity!
Gas ain't going down for the foreseeable future. Get used to the idea of $5-$6 or more permanently. This will be a paradigm shift to the American way of life which heretofore has been very much based on the availability of reasonably inexpensive energy - especially for transportation. The real sad thing is we all saw it coming in he 1970s and more recently in 2007-2008 and didn't do jack... We simply did what we've always done and bought more big pickups and SUVs and pretended that it didn't matter cause we're 'mericans. |

Yup, higher oil means inflationary pressures. Higher prices for other commodities - cotton, metals - are also inflationary. Packaged food prices have been rising, partly disguised by smaller quantities. Clothing prices will be rising very soon. Car prices are rising too, in the form of lower incentives, actual price increases, and soon less bargaining - production cutbacks at Japanese OEMs play a major role there.
In some sense, you'd expect this. In the big recession, prices for many things were falling, and deflation was pretty close - that would have been bad indeed. Now, with the global economy recovering, inflation is to be expected. Some inflation is good, just don't want too much. China is an example of too much - I think true inflation there is well over 10%, the government needs to be, and is, very worried. Here in the US, not so much. Quote:
