Just cut my gas bill in half!

With $4.00/gallon gasoline, it occured to me that maybe it's time to drive something other than my full-size 3/4 t 4x4 pick-up.

It also occured to me that I have an old 944S sitting in storage that I bought to turn into another race car.

After sitting for two years, it fired right up and passed the emissions test.

It has not even been well-set-up, but still is quite fun to drive, and going from 13 mpg to 30 mpg is a pure joy.

As my truck nears 200,000 miles (still running as new), I guess it's earned a rest now and then.

It may not be as cool as a Mustang , but I don't mind just driving for driving's sake.

Just keep an eye out for a green mustang in your rear view mirror.

I have been debating bringing my 944 back into daily driver status lately as well. I would miss all the creature comforts of my truck though. By "I", I mean my wife as she complained that the AC has decided to blow slightly cooler than ambient air and I don't have the time currently to figure out what the problem is.

Enjoy the ride!

Wow, 30mpg? That's awesome. In my old 3.2l I used to get 15-19mpg around town. In my last miata I managed 23-25mpg to/from work. Now in my turbo miata I'm getting 22-24mpg to/from work.

I've all but parked my F150, as the MPG is about 10-11. Instead I use a 1991 BMW 318is that gets 25 MPG around town.

It's not as exciting or as well set up as a 944, but it's fun.

Yeah, on my drive to upm I real world checked my mileage and did an honest 30mpg. Filled up in the morning drove to work, then hit the road so with maybe 25% city driving and 75% freeway I did 30mpg filled up after ~180 miles. An 8 valve could probably do 32+

I usually average ~25 but I drive very heavy footed.

I justified buying my 944 because of the gas mileage. My Jeep gets 13MPG, and my 944 averages 30. I quickly fell in love with it, and now have both a wife and a mistress. I do drive the 944 very often, even though some days I just have to drive the Jeep either because it is the perfect convertible day, or it is snowing.

I have the FRWilkes power prom in mine. The car gets around 26 MPG on the highway and maybe 18 MPG around town. I'm just fine with those numbers.

My wife's daily driver is a lifted Rubicon! Great fun (except at the gas pump!).

My targa get 30 mpg. It's great to get in a 25 year old car and get mileage that our new cars can not.

Currently two 944s in the stable including one that sees semi-regular DD use on days unsuitable for motorcycle riding. They're good looking, sporty, fun and (yes) not too bad on the petrol consumption. I'm even considering trading in my Mercedes SLK for a 968 convertible, which will still give me a drop-top, allow me to get rid of OBD-II and all its associated pains in the ass, do all my own maintenance (I've done nearly everything that can be done to a 924/944/951 or variant at this point), lots of spare parts, etc. and no more depreciation (althouh the MB depreciates minimally at this point). What's not to like?

Get a turbo too - they're shockingly good on fuel consumption unless you've got your foot in it a lot...

My Boxster gets an easy 30 on the highway and 20-25 in mixed driving. The 996 is more like 25 MPG highway, but still not bad. It tends to shock people that an "impratical" sports car can be so good as a daily driver.

Has anyone seen the Porsche "everyday" commercials and ads? I like them because they emphasize this exact fact, Porsches can be very practical daily drivers too.

My 2wd Cummins truck gets some near compact car mileage. Only issue with that is that the Cummins naturally uses diesel, which on the east coast is as expensive as premium.

I miss the late-year 944 I had. Fun car, good mileage, decent handling (it wasn't well-setup).

I'll probably get another once I'm out of this apartment and closer to a house...

Also, I cut my gas bill in ¼ last October... Went from driving the Carrera every day to riding a 900cc motorcycle. $13 at the pump gets me about 2 weeks worth of riding if I don't go out to the Inbred Empire.

My regular DD is an '08 Silverado half ton that gets 14.5 mpg per the onboard computer. I've wanted a 997 since they came out and finally bought a used one a few months ago. As a side benefit I figured I get much better mileage than the truck. It's better, but not by much; the 997S gets 17.6 mpg per the onboard computer!

I used to have a 944 turbo-

30 mpg on the way to the track, less than 10 mpg while on the track, 30 mpg on the way home. Great fun.
